Rumbling noise from front deceleration

Rumbling noise on decelaration Report post
Hi Guys, I need some advice. Recently bought a 2009 TDV8. Only just noticed a rumbling noise similar to wheel bearing noise but only really noticable on decelaration or constant slow speed. Any ideas or help would be gratefully received

Slight modification to this post. The rumbling noise is worse on deceleration but now continuous, no change on braking and if I slip into neutral is still there. Can feel a slight vibration in steeling wheel. I'm now panicking

Thanks
Rich

Could be the front diff. When mine started to go the first manifestation was a noise on deceleration although more of a knocking noise than a rumble . 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

As you don't say whether front or rear might be worth checking the rear prop centre bearing. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

Pretty sure it's coming from the front. Can't hear any outside noise but going to get it on a ramp at the local garage to see if we can determine the problem

Hi Chopperchinn,

Did you ever get to the bottom of this problem?, I believe I'm experiencing the same?
Would love to know what was wrong. Regards,

Danny

I have the same rumbling from the front. It's been diagnosed as front diff and I have seen the quality of the oil from there which definitely shows that something's amiss. Just waiting for my Indie to schedule a slot to whip it out and have a look. Warranty job I hope.
BTW my Indie says that rather than rebuild any faults with my diff they recommend using their specialist who will replace with an exchange diff. That way the car is off the road for less time and they tell me the components in the recon diff I get are better quality than what LR fit.
Yet to look at all the detail but it's a good story so far. Robin

Hi Eaters,
Hmm that's interesting, I had mine in a garage a few weeks back and I asked them to have a quick look
Over the drive line ( it was in for a suspension re-cal), they checked prop bearing and a quick general look over but
Also checked the front did oil level and colour and found it to be clean with no contamination.
It's really bugging me now so I will be interested to see what your outcome is?, who will be doing the work for you
And do you know what sort of cost this will be?.
It's just really odd how it makes no noise at all until you either freewheel or decelerate then you get a definite 'wurring'
Rotating rubbing with a slight vibration through the pedals.
Well I hope they sort yours, my love for this vehicle lasted about 2 days! Regards,

Danny

Hmm. Your problem sound very similar to mine. Vibration on the overrun. SWMBO doesn't notice it so its not massive but I do. First noticed it when I bought the car a year ago. Thought then that it was just what LRs do but a local 4x4 specialist took it for a test drive (about something else) and came back saying that the vibration was not right. They diagnosed a new front diff and prop-shaft (circa £2k from LR). They showed me oil from the front diff and it was awful. All grey/brown and you could feel bits in it. So there's definitely something wrong there. I had the oil changed as I was about to go on a long trip.
However I was not totally convinced with this 4x4 place and found another indie called Groombridges (Heathfield East Sussex). I have much more confidence in them. All they do is LRs and they've been at it for many years. A mate who used to be in the motor trade swears by them and he was in business about 25 years ago!
So Groombridges took it for a test drive and said immediately that before they could diagnose the vibration they had to sort out the front wheel bearing! WHAT? The other 4x4 place hadn't mentioned that when they were thinking of taking £2k off me!It took Groombridges 5 mins to suss the wheel bearing problem and even to demonstrate it to me. Really good service!
Sure enough when the o/s front wheel bearing was changed there was a significant improvement in the feel of the car but of course the vibration was still there. So that's what I'm about to go with. Illness in the family has put the job on the back burner but I need to get it sorted before the warranty runs out. I think they said around £750 for the replacement diff.
The fact that your oil in the diff is clear suggests that this in not your problem. However, I'd say double check everything else, especially wheel bearings before you start stripping the drive train.
BTW I don't think I get my vibration when freewheeling (i.e. rolling in neutral) only on the overrun but I'll check that when I'm out today. Robin

Hi Eaters,
Sorry to hear about the illness in your family,
I started a post the other day outlining the issue I'm having thinking if I'm experiencing it I can't be the first
'Its a Land Rover after all!' but over 70 views and not one reply!, so I posted on the Disco3 forum and also had
Many views but did get a couple of replies,1 reply said they had the same 'wurring' type noise on decel and it
Turned out to be a front wheel bearing/halfshaft spline issue ( both were changed ), so I really don't know?
I had just hoped it was an easy problem to diagnose so as I know how deep in need to dig into my pockets
Prior to visiting the garage.
It sounds like you have a good garage there, the one I'm using is a very small set up and owned by a father/son
Set-up, they specialise in LR's but not solely LR's they do all sorts but have defenders all over the place and both own
Disco's so they seem to know their way around them oh and they are my friends in-laws too!
Do you get your noise issue all the time or only after certain speeds and is it also present on accel as well as decel?
I haven't tried to see if its there in Neutral I haven't selected neutral when moving at all as yet.
Hopefully we will both get to the bottom of this issue soon! Regards,

Danny

Hi Danny
I do get the vibration when rolling in neutral! You can feel it through the floor. The vibration on mine is noticeable at all speeds I still feel that it is something out of balance (propshaft?) but as I have crap oil in my front diff that obviously needs to be fixed anyway. Then we'll see if the vibration has gone.
Best of luck with yours

Hi Robin,
As you say your oil in the front diff is definitely not good and needs attention, Your indies clearly know
what they are doing so I'm sure they will sort that, the out of balance thing maybe centre prop bearing? I hear
they can fail so might be worth a look at when its in the garage for the diff?
Good luck with it lets hope we figure out what these issues are! Regards,

Danny

Just an update on this. I've now had the front diff replaced, and hey presto, the vibration has gone. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Absolutely delighted. It's so quiet now, I can hear other little rattles I hadn't noticed before - but that's another story

My Indie was first class (Groombridges in Heathfield, East Sussex). Bow down Robin

Hi Danny1
Hmm. Just looking back over this post, and I get the feeling that yours and chopperchin's problem is different to mine. I would definitely class my noise as a vibration rather than a rumbling. Not particularly noisy. That plus what you say about not even being able to sell it because of it (and no dirty oil in the diff) makes me think we are talking about two different problems.
If its any help your bank balance will need about £850 if its a replacement diff. 3 hours work plus the bits.

Have you had the wheel bearings checked on yours? The noise I got from mine before they were done was more of a rumbling sound! What Groombridges did was take it for a drive and just turn it from side to side swinging it across the road whilst moving forward. the noise increased when turning left and they diagnosed o/s wheel bearing. I believe that you can also feel play in the wheel bearing if you jack up the car and then try to wobble the wheel. IIRC holding it at 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock but however you hold it there should be no play. If there is, suspect wheel bearing.

Wish you the best with your problems.
