New Brakes all round

Hi guys,

I have a 2010 RRS TDV8.

My garage has advised my brakes are worn as follows: Front 60%, Rear 70%). They advised changing all discs and pads (for £1,000!)

In normal driving, what mileage can I expect to eek out of these? We do around 3,000 miles per year so I'm hoping they should last a good while.

I've done a little research online and have found all the parts (4 x discs and sets of pads suitable for the car (front and rear) for £220 deliveres (from Euro Car Parts). However, I've also found these http://www.dls-uk.co.uk/range-rover/range-...-tdv8.html which look super cheap. Should I go for the ECP parts or would the ones from DLS be OK?

Finally, I asked at a competent but non specialist garage close to me and they have quoted £150+VAT for fitting (3 hours labour) if I supply the parts.

What are your thoughts on the above? I don't want to be wasting money for no reason!

First thing I would do is change my garage, 1k for brake pad and disc replacement is a rip-off.

£150.00 just for fitting is reasonable, you can get genuine L/R parts off e-bay cheap enough

Buy Genuine and buy them from Dan at Duckworths (forum sponsor - search on here and tell him you are a forum member). Significantly cheaper than a main dealer.
I fitted Mintex discs and pads and they warped within a few 100miles. Just my experience and discussed lots over on Disco3 forum Thumbs Up

Thanks Dr Rob,

RR London were the ones who quoted me £1,000+VAT to supply and fit the brakes. What do you think is a reasonable cost? I've been told it's 3 hours labour (2 hours rear, 1 hour front) + parts.

RR London also quoted me 1 hours labour to fit a new high level third brake light as "it's bonded in". I did my research and it's actually a 10 minute job requiring a screw driver.

RR London get good reviews on here and D3 forum but never used myself....did they quote for Genuine parts? My front discs and pads and sensor were sub £300 delivered.
Rovertune in Reading are good
I just got a decent local garage who works on LR vehicles to do mine. They could not get anywhere near Dan's prices either Rolling with laughter
I would get a quote from Dan for all discs and pads and sensors delivered and then ask around for a fitting cost.
Or simply download Bodsy's Brake Bible off Disco 3 forum (a D3 is same car underneath) and DIY Thumbs Up Visitor from fullfatrr.com

When they say the "brakes" are 60%/70% worn, do they mean the discs? If so you should have years left in them at only 3k a year. The mileage you get from discs/pads varies a lot according to what you have, duty cycle and levels of contamination but you could easily have many years left in the discs at that rate. 60% worn still me as that there is an awful lot of material still left they're trying it on.

Simple maths says that you're doing 10% a year or thereabouts, so at least 2 years left although for that mileage, that's a lot of wear & especially if its in stop/start old London town?

It is in London, yes.

Is there any downside to waiting until the sensors tell me I need the brakes changed? Is that not what they're for?

There's only 2 sensors - NSF and OSR, in theory you could wear out other side quicker I guess. Might happen at the rear if caliper seized maybe - can be prone to it. However, the sensors leave enough margin for error for normal usage.

I wouldn't consider that you had too much to worry about at the moment. Dealers always try and "pre-empt" wear/tear and the rates are stupid (that you have been quoted).

Apologise, you are probably right not having a good day really, Sad it is easier if you have a second pair of hands to help support the spoiler though, as easy to mark/scratch the paint on the roof with the three longish mounting studs if trying to juggle it on your own.

Hi Pal I get mine from Euro Car Parts, but I only use Brembo Discs and Pads
hope that helps, very easy to change your self about 30 mins each side, I am in uxbridge I can show you if you like
