England 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Tonga Green
Cant Remove Tow Bar

Hi all. Had a look through the numerous threads regarding tow bars but cant see the answer to my issue.

The Tow Bar looks like its been on the car for years. The green release mechanism doesn't have the key lock on it that I've seen on other examples, instead there was a screw fitted that could be undone with an Allan key. Ive removed this screw, but when you pull the green release lever to the right, it then wont let me turn the lever down (at all).

Ive had a look at the full unit, and it looks like its never been removed, and that this "screw" has been some sort of measure to keep it in place.

Any ideas??? Is this going to be a lump hammer job??

Help appreciated!!

It will come out................. It just needs some help.

Give it a good soaking in WD40, then a lot of tapping and banging with a mallet from every angle you can hit it from............. Rubber or nylon mallet is preferable.

Of course this is no good unless the locking mechanism is open to release the towbar.

Good luck.

Edit*

It's heavier than it looks. Don't let it drop onto you. It WILL hurt !

Hi Darren

I hope this isn't stating the obvious. But after your liberal applications of release agent, you remember that after turning the key ( the green mashed up bit in your photo). You have to pull the release knob out before turning anti-clockwise to release the locking pin. A bit fiddly if your trying to persuade it and pull down at the same time probably need three hands for this bit. As previously mentioned its heavier than you think when it comes out.
Have Fun

Rae
