TDV8 or V6?

I'm pretty much made up that we're going to get a V6 - I was curious though, given that the 8 is not really any quicker but seems to be a LOT worse on juice, what is the USP of the 8?

Don't forget that when the TDV8 first arrived, the TDV6 was the 2.7 litre version and thus was somewhat slower. The TDV8 was supposed to bridge the gap between 2.7TDV6 and the S/C in place of the defunct 4.4 petrol V8 (which was more thirsty and no quicker than the TDV8).

The arrival of the 3.0TDV6 rather made the TDV8 somewhat unnecessary which is probably why it didn't last that long. Having said that, bear in mind that there were two versions of the 3.0TDV6 - 237bhp/370lbft and 251bhp/440lbft. I'm not sure the lower output version lasted long in the RRS though. I think it was used in the Disco Commercial however. Whilst the TDV8 has only 30lbft of torque more than the better version of TDV6, the torque curve is like Table Mountain from 1700rpm onwards. It has that "freight train" feeling when overtaking and when towing big loads.

Having driven a friend's SDV6 I can say that whilst it's quick enough in isolation, it just seemed to lack a smidge (and it really is just a smidge) of poke when overtaking. I'd be happy with the 3.0TDV6 / SDV6 in place of my TDV8. I'd miss the rumble and slight extra urge but I'd welcome the extra fuel economy.

Buy either and be happy Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

In 2010 I test drove the TDV8 and the TDV6 3.0 back to back. I preferred the way the TDV6 drove and it felt faster on the day for some reason. I cancelled my search for a TDV8 and ordered a new TDV6 without regret. I do sometimes wish my TDV6 had a bit more poke but it's more than fast enough in practical terms. It happily did bursts of 130 mph on the autobahn and didn't take long to get there. I get about 25 mpg in general and I get up to 32 mpg on long runs at sensible speeds.

So basically, drive them back to back and then decide the one that feels the best for you, it seems to be quite a personal preference. Or get a 5.0 S/C! Based upon a UK average of £1.36 for a litre of diesel, £1.31 for a litre of unleaded (taken from http://www.petrolprices.com) I make it:



So on average for annual mileages of 8,000 to 20,000, based on MPG and fuel cost assumptions above, the additional fuel cost is "only" £1,500 more annually for the 5.0 vs the 3.0! L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

Seriously I'd not need any persuading SWMBO on the other-hand... plus I've already had a fun supercharged V8 (look up F150 SVT Lightning! Bow down ) so I'm not too worried about that aspect anymore (that being said.....)

I think that RRSTDV8 summed up my feelings perfectly. I love everything about my TDV8 except the economy but when you need to overtake and you feel that pull that seems to go on for ever with a nice lions roar in the background I even forgive the economy. It really comes down to personal choice and I suspect that most RRS owners are happy with theirs and that's with at least 5 engines variants available.

Ive just returned from a 600 mile trip over 24 hours mostly M ways and got a measured 26.2 mpg at (ahem) varying speeds. The V8 poke is addictive and as Ilard shows the difference in fuel ain't such a big deal.

I keep telling myself buying the SC would be sensible now as Im doing around 8k miles/year now I work from home and Mrs Bradders has been thoroughly Stepfordised, through boredom lol, as far as my car purchasing is concerned as long as its a RRS….. Whistle Whistle Whistle FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

I had the same debate .... For about 30 seconds! Easy way to answer your own question, would you be happy watching other V8s go by if you got a V6 or would you look and go - wish I had got one of those....

As for the fuel economy, no it isn't great but I managed the below when I did a run to Amsterdam and back last summer with the family. Not bad really!

just recently done a 240 mile round trip to the Lake disrtrict and managed 28.1mpg which i though was quite good Smile 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

I get low 20s but I run 19s with 55-profile ATs which probably don't help and being slightly larger than standard will affect the fuel computer's calculations too. I have seen 28mpg on a longish slow run (50-60mph consistently) 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

My TDv8 (a 2007 which is for sale by the way in the For Sale & Wanted section ;0) does 26mpg and is as fast as the original SC's (a mate had one and we tested them against each other. He then sold his SC and bought a TDv8).

To my mind the BHP comparison between a TDv6 and a TDv8 is quite misleading. It is the torque that makes all the difference. Where a TDv6 showers you with Torque the TDv8 treats you to a luxurious warm bath of torque. It is so addictive that once experienced no TDv6 can ever adequately substitute. Thumbs Up
