Available - 18" off-road rim for 3.0 ltr

Thought I'd post this here, although it's really for Australian RRS owners ....

I've been talking to the state GMAX wheel distributor about sourcing an 18" rim that will fit the RRS and D4 3.0 ltr. Here in Oz, there are quite a few off-road tyre options for the 18" rim size, but only one or two for the 19". There was one off-the-shelf 18" rim that almost cleared the calipers, so he went back to the factory and asked on my behalf about a custom order.

They have come up with an 18x8 design (a forged alloy rim) that will clear the calipers and is load rated for the RRS and D4. Their offer is for a custom run of 15 sets of 5 rims each. Cost is $375 AU per rim, so $1875AU for a set. If anyone is interested, PM me. I'm not sure what the deal on freight would be - presumably they will send rims to their retail branches free-of-charge.

There's a picture of the design in my Disco3.co.uk gallery:

Hi Disco4x4..

It certainly sounds very intresting. Although I couldn't get your link to teh PDF to work.

However, I feel the need to introduce some caution here. In case you are not aware, Land Rover Australia are very strict when it comes to honouring warranty claims and providing support if you change from OEM wheels, and even OEM road tyres to others such as all terrains.

I have first hand experience of this, and you can see this discussed in the following two threads.

http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic15730.html

http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic15769.html

At the end of the day its your call what you do with your car, but just wanted to highlight my first hand experience over the last year.

Sorry, try this link:

There is also a photo of the rim (in 20" version) here:

Yes, I'm aware of LRA's policies, and have dealt with them numerous times before. So you're right in that it should be pointed out that LRA could conceivably use different rims as an excuse to fight a warranty claim. However, I'm not aware of any legal restriction on rim diameter, only width, so it's a matter of dealing with LRA or your dealer, not a legal issue.

I'm happy with that.

Cheers,

I agree with you points disco4x4- and I can atest I have tried dealing with Melbourne City Land Rover (MLR) and Land Rover Australia. To much frustration I might add Evil or Very Mad Big Cry

Out of curiosity what tyre brand and size will you go for if you manage to get these wheels made?

I'm after two sets - one for a set of Cooper Zeon LTZ 285/60/18's and one for a set of Maxxis Bighorn 275/65/18 muddies. The latter will require shortened rods to fit.

Has anyone tried fitting 18 x 8 Comps PD1880 (those made for the Bowler) over the new brakes yet? Those rims used to fit over the Brembos of 2006-2009 RRS, and even though I am pretty sure they would no longer fit the even larger Brembos of the 2010 S/C, they may have enough clearance for the new brakes on 3.0 Diesel (and 5-liter normally aspirated petrol engines here in the US, same brakes and same limited choice of 19" AT tires...)

PS: What's the exchange rate between AU$ and US$ these days, anyway? Laughing

I've actually asked Matt at Bowler the same question, and he's going to try it out in the next week or so, and get back to me. Dynamic 4x4 in Australia are also making a new 18" steel rim that they say might fit - it'll be out sometime late January.

Fingers crossed. Besides their build quality, I also like the way the Comps/Bowlers look, although at $450/pop (and that was 2 years ago, the last time I checked with the US importer...) they are not exactly a bargain around here.

Australia 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV8 S Bonatti Grey

Hey guys,
I'm a new member, just picked up my 07 Tdv8 last week. It has 20" rims with full on road tyres on. (Not even road bias, flat out car tyres!!) I recently emailed the guys that make the wheels for Bowler in the UK and he's happy to sell them direct, but won't have any available until Bowler ask for another run, (which I'm guessing could be some time). I also fired an email off to Mickey Thompson as their website is showing a new rim designed specifically for big braked newer wagons, but haven't heard back yet. If there is a local alternative, count me in for 6.
Initially I wanted to put 33" baja claws on but at $675 per tyre, plus spacers, plus cutting the arches out and making up flares has got me looking at the Cooper STT in a 32". (Apparently made in the same factory and molds as the Baja MTZ??). Has anyone got a quote on the Maxxis? 4wding only starts when you have to get out the cab. Everything before that is just driving on crap roads!

Sorry to be a pest Gordon, just curious to see if you had any news on the above, from either companies.

I put a post on the forums 2 years ago about buying these rims from Compomotive. They were a special design for Bowler but with permission from Bowler Compomotive were prepared to do a special manufacturing run if I could guarantee a minimum order of something like 400 wheels. They would even cast in any logo I wanted................ and they were going to be extremely expensive! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Cheers Tim, I remember that Group Buy offer... Shocked But with larger brakes introduced on most MY2010 trims, I am wondering if those Comps "Bowler" will still fit over the new calipers, if not on the S/C at least on the normally aspirated 5-liter petrol and 3-liter diesel trims. OEM 18s from MY2005-2009 will no longer fit.

They are designed to fit over the calipers of the Bowler Nemisis which is the Bowler offroad racer version of RRS, the calipers of the 2010RRS are Brembo but without the logo, these wheels were designed to fit over wheels with with Brembo calpiers afaik 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim, while it is true that Brembo still makes the "private label" brakes for the S/C version of RRS and FFRR, the calipers and discs they manufacture for the MY2010 S/C are substantially larger than those used between 2005 and 2009 S/C. Same story with the "standard" non-Brembo brakes, those have also grown bigger for 2010 compared to earlier model years, on every trim except perhaps the base "S" (not available here in North America), I believe.
