As yet we don't get 100Mb cable in the UK (although it's coming), so I've not seen one to recommend...

Doesn't your ISP provide one?

Assuming your router is not ancient you should definitely be seeing up to 100 Mbits. I had a quick look on my router here (which is a Netgear) and there are no traffic management/throttling options so I should imagine yours is the same). It might be worth a call to Netgear to understand why?

I don't use cable (can't get it out in the sticks here) so not sure what the issue could be. I am not sure buying a new router will solve the problem as its likely something wrong with the setup and not the router. If you are using wireless to subsequently connect to the router then thats where you will see the downturn in the connection speed and 30-54Mbps would be about the right range dependent upone what other "noise" you have in the house such as cordless telephones.

I'd check the setup on the router for traffic management options (if any) and then perhaps contact Netgear and ascertain what is holding back the bandwidth. Routers and switches connected by cable have been operating as 10/100 Mbps since time began so I can't imagine your router won't work at 100 Mbps.

If the problem is with wireless then just upgrade to an 802.11n router which will run in excess of 100 Mbps. you will also need to upgrade your wireless network cards if they do not operate at this protocol also. if you have to uprade I would hold on for the dual band routers which are currently available in the US but not in Europe (last time I checked). THat way if the problem is related to other "noise" in the house then you can switch the operating band to move away from the 2.4 Ghz that most domestic appliances would operate at.

Asides from that I don't know what to suggest but, afaik, a new router won't magically solve the problem. WINNER - 2009 Best Newcomer Award

Mmmm... I'm no expert, but my thinking would be that unless you have a 'wireless n' router and capable similar capable network card you will not get anywhere near 100MBits actual on your wireless.

See here for details:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11

Wireless n or 802.11n was draft until only a couple of weeks ago. I have a 'wireless n' router, but need to get the USB dongle as my laptops intenal wireless network card only supports up to g...

As I said no real netowrk expert, so happy to be corrected by more informed types...

Angel needs 100Mb on the WAN port, not on the LAN side Wink

Mate, how does your cable provider terminate at your wall socket? Is it a network port? i.e. could you buy a standard ethernet router and use that or does it need to be a cable modem?

Why would someone want that in their home? Confused

EDIT: Ah sorry I get it now! I wouldn't assume that the problem is on the WAN side simply because it works when directly connected myself but I am guessing you know more than I do about Angels setup WINNER - 2009 Best Newcomer Award

Angel is lucky enough to have 100Mb cable service, yet his router only "manages" 33Mb on the WAN side, meaning from his PC to the "internet" he'll only ever get what the router can manage, let alone what he gets on his own network.... what Angel is after is a router that will give him a 100Mb carrier so that the internet at large is his bottleneck, not like 99% of us, the connection into our homes.

Not that I do IT for a living or anything.... Wink

Angel does your switch support splitting and amplifying?
(Can bandwith be amplified or maintained once split???)

I.e. does it provide switching by only splitting the bandwith per component. As 2 PS3s and 1 computer would equal 100mb /3 equals 33mb at each component.

I could be completely wrong. Confused

As I also have Cat5 cabling to all rooms in the house, except the games room. But never got round to fitting the Cat5 sockets in the rooms or fitting a switcher, the cables are still coiled up in the back boxes. Whistle

Must get round to finishing that. Laughing Laughing

And if I ever do, you can let me know whats the best switcher. Thumbs Up

When you say connecting directly to the internet, do you mean via a USB modem or something?

If you're connected to your router via a network card, check to see if your network card duplex settings are set to Full. Gone: RRS : HSE : TDv6 : 57 : Java Black : Ebony : 20"

United States 2007 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Buckingham Blue

for a good 1000Mbps connection using a non wireless router I would recommend something like a DLink DGL4100 but you will also need a 1000Mbps network adaptor in the PC with a card like a Dlink DGE560T if you have a spare PCI slot.... so you may get most of this bandwidth around your network but I doubt once you get past the modem it will continue.... well at least it doesnt here with our cable service.

BTW DLink is imho the best to setup.... non of this netgear nonsense Wink
