2010MY TDV6 v's TDV8

Is there any point in the TDV8 now?

3.0 TDV6 245PS 600NM 2535KG 97 BHP/Ton 0-60MPH 8.8 secs
3.6 TDV8 272PS 640NM 2656KG 102 BHP/Ton 0-60MPH 8.6 secs

Is the TDV8 a single turbo still?

Prefer the kudos of the V8 but can't see the reason to part with the extra £5k.

TDv8 has always been a twin turbo - one on each bank. TDv6 is now twin turbo, but sequential
The £5k price difference gets you a whole load more toys as standard for a TDv8 HSE over the TDv6 3.0ltr HSE like adaptive cruise, extra TR programme (a "high" performance setting) Adaptive Bi xenon lights,
I agree though that if you take it on performance then it's a "no brainer" to go for the 2010MY TDv6 although the TDv8 is still faster and quicker accelerating than the TDv6, there isn't £5000 of difference! I would still have another Tdv8 in preference to a 3.0ltr TDv6 though!

Thanks for the info on the turbo's for the V8. You can still buy those options for the V6, but agree if you do, it would make sense to go for the V8. (Mind you I got the adaptive lights on my D3 and won't rush to tick the option again.) I would be interested to see how the 2 compare. I reckon a sequential turbo on the V6 must be far better than the V8 set up. Do you get as much foot tapping moments as I do on my D3 as you wait for 1950rpm. Laughing Going to try the '10MY RRS on Friday, never buy the same product twice Wink ..........

PS I love big engines, I'm just surprised LR didn't raise the bar of the TDV8 range and separate more from the TDV6 with the 2010 upgrades......Plus the fuel burn is so much more for the TDV8 and you are not getting much more for it................. 2010MY Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE

Seeing as the TDV6 is the same as in the XF, albeit with less power but more torque it will be a fantastic engine.

The reviews the XF has had with that engine have all been top notch and as far as refinement it is beyond reproach. Dare I say better than the TDV8?

It surprises me that LR didn't reserve the TDV8 for the FFRR, use a high power version of the TDV6 for the RRS and a slightly milder version for the D4 to form a hierarchy in the range. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

I agree, at this point of time there is no point why you should buy the TDV8 in my eyes although it does sound really great. Thumbs Up I hope they will do a bigger and stronger version of the TDV8 then there will be reason to buy it again - I'm thinking of something like 4.2 ltr., 330 bhp and 700 Nm, that would be great... Sometimes but if I put it into Sport mode the car leaps away from stopped, I put it down to when I do town driving the gearbox remembers that I generally don't burn rubber away from stopped...................

I think we might have to wait until the new Jaguar XJ before we see anything of the rumoured 4.0TDv8 which will return us to the desired performance gap between TDv6 and TDv8

In day to day driving I am getting the same or better mpg in my TDv8 than I got in my TDv6 - on a long run on the motorway I regularly see 33mpg in the V8 and that is better than I got in the TDv6 on the same 450 mile run from Stirling to Southampton. But yes the 3.0ltr in laboratory conditions appears to be better, it will be interesting to see if in real life it is as claimed....................... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

just ask a dealer who had a chance to test drive the new TDV6. Thumbs Up

Apparently it's a non-brainer, unless of course you need that little TDV8 badge on the back... Whistle SOMETIMES YOU'RE THE BUG AND SOMETIMES YOU'RE THE WINDSHIELD

hmmmm interesting. Im still itching for the new MY10 and was convinced i couldnt give up the V8 when i do get the chance to change (looking for a good deal on the new e class for mum first if anyone got any hookups Whistle )... Looks like i might just have to take the 3.0 for a test drive Thumbs Up . Then again i want all the options so might just be worth going for the tdv8. I think James was telling me the orders for TDV8's in MY10 are pretty much non existent at the moment Shocked . WINNER - 2008 Best All New Photograph

Well, I guess it's time then to ask for a TDV8, if you get enough discount for it to be just 2 or 3k more expensive than the TDV6 it makes sense again, I'd say. From what I understand LR are working on a bigger TDV8 and this will be anounced some time soon Wink

A point to note is the new 3ltr is essentially the same engine as the 2.7 but either bored out or a change in the stroke etc. They have added the extra turbo now but what about tuning Question

I know what happens when you tune the TDV8 Very Happy Thumbs Up Very Happy and also when you do the same to the TDV6 Smile

The difference after is huge, so will the new 3ltr after tuning be close to the TDV8 Question "UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" ----is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" -----------is how far you take the fence with you.
