Modern vehicles are immensely strong - it's one reason why they're heavier than yesteryear. Not sure it's just the Defender that would have taken such a hit and left the driver unscathed, but it's certainly a good advert for them. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Land Rover Designs New Roll Cage And Suspension For A Hardcore Offroad Defender: https://carbuzz.com/news/land-rover-design...d-defender

Quote:
... The first patent details a roll cage right down to the spare wheel mounting, and the second patent involves a new bump stop design intended specifically for multi-link suspension systems used with a unibody vehicle, but specifically shows how this system would mount to a roll cage.

In combination, these patents indicate that a Land Rover Defender could be under development for off-road racing duties, because this particular combination of body construction and suspension design are key features of the new Defender. And, given the advanced development of these patents, it's not impossible that a new Defender-based contender could be entered into off-road endurance races such as the Dakar Rally or the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge very soon.

There isn't anything particularly noteworthy about the spaceframe's design, but the hydraulic bump stops are somewhat novel. ...

New Land Rover Defender SVX spotted with performance upgrades: https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/land-rover/d...e-upgrades

"... The big changes come beneath the window line however. The flared wheel arches are needed because they house some chunky BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres on a new alloy wheel design. The suspension has also been raised up for extra ground clearance and it’s almost certain the spring rates have been adjusted for off-roading too.

At the front there’s camouflage covering the front bumper and grille - suggesting this SVX model will gain a new face, in a similar fashion to the SVX versions of the old car. The front and rear lights look unchanged from the standard model.

The powertrain sitting underneath the beefed up bodywork is a mystery. The most obvious choice is the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 from the Defender V8, producing 518bhp and 625Nm of torque. Our images show a quad-exhaust tip set up, but the backbox looks different to the Defender V8 and the tips are set a little further back into the body work. Only time will tell if this Defender has actually made use of Land Rover and BMW’s engine partnership, borrowing the German firm’s 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8. ..."

Just an Autocar image so don’t expect it to be like this though they have said it will be boxy.

That chap doesn't like anything that isn't exactly what he wants. And he moans like a pro.

The reality is that the vast majority of new Defenders won't go anywhere off road, let alone try to cross central Africa or Australia. People doing these things are limited in number meaning any vehicle designed to cater for them would be a niche product.

If I wanted to do something like that, I'd go and buy a traditional 4x4 and alter it to suit my requirements. I would expect a multi-national to build such a vehicle because I realise that it would mess up their ability to meet the raft of environmental legislation that they have to deal with in order to sell the hundreds of thousands of other vehicles they sell every year.

Even the supposed "real Defender replacement that's built to go anywhere" has masses of electronics in it - it's the reality for any modern car.

You want a "fix it with a hammer" vehicle for overlanding? Build your own - there are plenty of base vehicles available to use. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Quite a few owners in Australia take their Defenders off road (its in the local psyche) and on trips around
Australia, Most are aware of the battery draining, easy to overcome by locking the vehicle and just
opening the rear cargo door with the key in your pocket.. the vehicle then does not fire up the ecu's ,
In regard to not being able to put the vehicle into neutral when dead in his cr@p report, on mine
there is a manual toggle/switch under the engines plastic cover which you can use.. think it may be the
same on Rangies as well..

I just got back from a 2 month trip touring Western Queensland and the Northern Territory plenty of time off the bitumen, towed our accommodation and it performed brilliantly.. saw quite a few other Defender
owners out there as well Thumbs Up not as many as Toyota's mind you Sheep Whistle

There is a channel on youtube, Overlanding with Bruce, he puts up some great vids of his adventures
touring parts of Southern Africa with his Deffer.. worth a look

"Beefier new suspension system, that seems to be hydraulic... we suspect to help increase articulation, remove antiroll bars & reduce high speed body roll etc. 👊🏾

Also shown, high clearance rear quad exhausts, rear orange recovery hoops, possible front grill lights, 33s higher ride hight, roof load. 🔥

Release is eminent and 600hp+"

https://media.landrover.com/news/2024/03/d...mance-hero

"... Defender OCTA will feature V8 Twin Turbo mild-hybrid petrol power and class-leading 6D Dynamics air suspension, enabling extreme performance across all terrains.

Available for the first time on Defender, 6D Dynamics will give Defender OCTA an unparalleled breadth of capability, comfort and composure, whether on-road or off-road.

The hydraulic interlinked 6D Dynamics technology features an innovative pitch and roll control system that will enable Defender OCTA to maintain a near-level stance during acceleration, braking and cornering on-road, while also maximising independent wheel travel and articulation across the most demanding off-road terrain.

Reflecting the vehicle’s luxury credentials, a diamond’s octahedron shape inspires the new OCTA name – diamond being the hardest naturally occurring substance on Earth, renowned for its rarity.

A new encircled diamond graphic symbolizes the flagship Defender model. It features on a number of interior and exterior components, including as a gloss black diamond within a machined and sandblasted titanium disc on each Signature Graphic panel. Titanium has also been chosen for its robustness and resilience to the elements in its natural state.

Defender OCTA is undergoing the most exhaustive development regime in Defender history, from the snow and ice of Sweden to Dubai desert, Nürburgring tarmac and Moab rock crawls.... "

6D debuted on the RRS SV and uses hydraulics to link the dampers and provide the roll control normally given by anti-roll bars. So this should allow for great control on road and give maximum articulation off road (not that anyone will be taking any of these things off road, of course, at least for the next few years anyway).
