Potential Engine Failure - Camshaft Drive Wheel Snapped!

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone can help offer some advice on an issue I have with my 3L RRS (2015 plate, autobiography).

I was driving down the M5 the other day and suddenly "limp mode", power loss and shuddering as come to stop in the hard shoulder. Couldn't get her moving again.

Towed to my local garage and upon inspection the camshaft drive wheel had completely sheared off! (Has anyone heard of this before as a failure or a common fault?) - See the photo attached.

Done 82k miles and new cambelt was fitted just 6 months ago, cambelt still intact (albeit slipped) and engine still turning over and the sheared cam is turning freely by hand (I would expect this to seize?)

Given the above, do you think the engine will be damaged? Obviously outside of insurance claim (despite fully comp), so I'm hoping we can potentially repair this without a full engine change!

Tough one to take, as new cambelt + service just 6 months prior.

I would think one of the first things you need to start with is remove the cylinder heads etc. to check for bent valves or damaged pistons, as you in effect have had the equivalent of a cambelt snap more often than not this would lead to the pistons hitting and possibly bending the valves due to timing being now out, on some manufactures engines there is enough clearance that this doesn't happen, but I don't know with the 3.0L L/R engine whether this will happen or not, I more likely suspect it will.

Cheers
Col

I read something similar on the D3 sister forum. It was metal fatigue and I'm Censored if I can find the thread. If I do I link it. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Hi, same thing happened to our 2010 RRS, damaged valves etc, currently reviewing options and gathering info on historical camshaft pulley metal fatigue failures.
