Clunk when pulling lever out of P

I've recently started to notice when pulling back the gear lever out of Park, its a little resistant with an associated clunk. Through analysing it, it only occurs when the car is in access mode. If I leave the car in standard height there is no resistance or clunk deselecting P.

Some will say don't put it in acces. But I don't have side steps fitted plus we have dogs that go with us most places. Car runs fine and changes gear seamlessly.

Thoughts anyone?.

I had the gear lever go stiff on me which is a common problem when the gear lever pivot coming out of the gearbox becomes covered in crud. Some replace it with a new one, but I just cleaned it up and gave it a bit of lubricant and it's been fine since. Could this be your problem?

Wow thanks for your reply. I've had a thought and I'll feel this morning. When I raise the car then try to deselect P and see how it feels. If clinky you might have nailed it. Thumbs Up 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Try putting it in access mode with the gearbox in N and the handbrake off.

Lowering it in gear and with the handbrake on will put strain on both.

I often use Access mode and have got into the habit of selecting this before I come to a complete stop so that the suspension has time to adjust. Then into N and put the handbrake on before selecting P just to reduce strain on the little pin in the gearbox that locates when you select P. Don't want 2.5 tons all pressing on that little pin especially if parked on a hill. Robin

It has made a difference as you all say above. Stop, into N then lower, handbrake on and into P.

Thanks all Thumbs Up . 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Great so hear Steve. Now just go one better and keep it rolling as you select Access mode and keep it rolling until Access mode is done. Then handbrake on etc.

I don't know where I saw this - probably on here many years ago - but it can't do any harm and it makes sense to me, to let the suspension geometry get used to the new angles. Just look from the rear at the angle of the wheels between Access mode and Standard and you will see it. Thumbs Up Robin
