Transfer box oil ...75w90?

Just having a conversation with those rude people on Range Rovers .Net about using 5W30 in the transfer box to stop the chain slap.

Part of the conversation went like this .

These base oils are close to 75W90 but it is the additives that make it special.

When I drained mine which has always been main dealer serviced the oil was like the very thin ATF used in the main box . Nothing like 75w90.
So can anyone compare the viscosity of the real stuff to ...1/ ATF 2/engine oil 3 / 75w90.

A polite thanks in advance Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

Hey Pistnbroke, the oil in the transfer case is a special oil. It’s similar to 75w90, but has additives for the electronic clutch (more like removals similar to motorcycle oil with wet clutches). Have you drained the front and rear diffs and put in the correct oil for them? They’re also a 75w90 but nearly clear and also thinner than standard 75w90.

Hopefully whatever 5w30 you put in doesn’t have friction modifiers in it. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
