Engine Failure 3.0tdv6

Hi,

Yesterday when driving home noticed a dip in the engine rpm when sat at a junction and the car bogged down slightly when pulling away. No apparent noises, no warning lights, no smoke and engine picked up normally after a second or so. I drove the 1 mile or so back home monitoring the dash and all appeared to be ok. Got to my drive, stuck the car into reverse and while reversing I noticed the oil light flickering and then illuminated fully . There is a a tapping noise, not crank failure as the engine still starts but turns over sluggishly so I’m thinking the oil pump has failed.

Gonna pull the oil filter and see what lies beneath .
Just goes to show, no matter how much love and car you give these engines there is always that chance something is gonna let go. See below information.

2014 Ranger Rover L494 sport
3.0tdvs
52,000 miles
Serviced regularly at around every 6,000 miles
Last full service was only 300 miles ago.

Now I’m from the highlands of Scotland and I’m weighing up my options. Do I have my own engine rebuilt, do I buy a reconditioned engine or is there an option to buy a brand new unit ?. I’ve had the car for 7 years and this is the first issue I’ve had, the car is immaculate and if I could buy a new engine and keep the car for another ten years then I would. I’d appreciate everyone’s thoughts and maybe if anyone from Scotland has had a similar dilemma please share your experience. What options do I have to have this carried out in Scotland ? I’ve had a few quotes from the London area but to get the vehicle there is around £1300.

Appreciate any help or advice

Best regards

Mike is already on the case sourcing a Gen 2 reconditioned JLR unit as we speak.

That’s very similar to how my SDV6 behaved just before the crank snapped and the engine seized
at 88K miles whilst out of warranty. JLR supplied a new engine and a local independent Land Rover specialist did the work. Engine & parts £7500, labour £1700 with a £1700 goodwill refund from JLR.
The car was owned from new and properly serviced but not by a main dealer in the last few years.
Hope yours turns out to be just the pump! 2014 RRS AB Santorini Black

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the late reply on this.
I’m wondering if the so called “crank issue” is in actual fact caused by a failed oil pump and not the crank itself.

For example, I was only trundling along a single track road, 20/30mph when I realised something wasn’t right and noticed the oil light flickering. Now I think if I had been motoring on and doing 60mph I probably wouldn’t have noticed the oil light and then the next thing you know is Catastrophic engine failure.

I’m having a new JLR engine being fitted which is on back order !! From Landrover. This comes with unlimited mileage 2 year warranty. I think it would be prudent whenever the timing bets are changed to also include the oil and water pump. That’s what I’ll be doing from now on regardless of the expense.

Hi, you are correct, it can be caused by a number of things.
Manufacturing defect in the crankshaft, oil starvation due to failed Oil pump, using the wrong oil etc. 2014 RRS AB Santorini Black

I sold a my14 AB only 33k miles,FLRSH after only 2 week of ownership (new owner) crankshaft let go on M6,luckily it was still under LR approved warranty.
Mileage & how well it’s been serviced doesn’t seem to make much difference with this crankshaft issue. Andy.
