Hi folks,

I've booked my RRS in for a gearbox megaflush with HWB Automotive at Halesworth.

It had a fluid and filter change at 75k by an independent the previous owner used but looking at the receipt I would assume it was a drain, filter change and refill due to the quantity of oil used.

With regards to having a megaflush carried out, what is the current going rate, HWB quoted me £475 inc vat.

Back in 2018, I had mine done by a local specialist indie - cost £252 (incl VAT) but of course a few things have happened since then to affect the price Robin

BTW resetting the adaptations for the transmission while megaflushing did wonders for shift quality in my RRS. Regards etc.,

Thanks Steve an Wojtek, I really should have asked earlier as I would like this done next week as we are using the sport to visit family around the country for a couple of weeks. Thought I'd get it flushed prior to that.

That's intereseting Wojtek, I've read a few posts saying to get the adaptations reset and a couple where they say not as its a used unit , not new and can cause more problems than its worth . Again, this is only what I've read.

Is it the general consesus to have them reset ?

I've been warned as well ("old clutches and the torque converter isn't also exactly new"), but I thought about it a little:

The "adaptations" are slight modifications to the original algorithm of the transmission ECU. They are there to compensate for the wear of the clutches, narrowed passages clogged with dust and dirt, worsened viscosity of the transmission fluid - I've heard even adjusting for operator habits. What they do is actually introducing some delay in operation of the transmission.

Now, the megaflush is intended to get rid of all the dirt inside the transmission and there is a proper amount of fresh fluid. Why would I want the transmission ECU to act as if nothing changed?

I am pretty sure the "adaptation" works only one way - the more tired the transmission, the more slack is given during shifts. There is no reason for the automatic adaptation to work the other way round, because the user himself can not do anything to reverse the wear of the transmission. However, the workshop can - by changing the innards or megaflushing the transmission. And the workshop can reset the adaptations, so the algorithm is up to the changed environment (if you called the transmission an "environment").

Since the only known (to me) way of clearing the adaptations is updating the TCM with whatever latest software JLR provides, the specialists are not really keen to do it (even JLR literature suggests "if it ain't broken, don't fix it", which is the polite way of saying "we have no idea how many bugs there are in the new software, so you possibly want to deal with known issues only and not some new ones we introduced").

So I went full commando and used SDD with "fit new TCM unit" procedure. At last my transmission shifts immediately when the engine is cold. It used to keep rpms up to 2500 before shifting to the next gear when driving slowly out of the neighborhood before everything got warm. Now when I move around town slowly it shifts beautifully at ~1700 rpm to the higher gear and attempts to keep rpms as low as possible (around 1100) when driving out my 20 mph zone. And high-speed upshifts are very quick and virtually seamless, which is fun with the tidal torque of the TDV8. Regards etc.,

The GAP diag.tool also has the facility to reset the transmission apadtion values.

Hi folks,

Just an update to say that I've had the mega flush procedure carried out on my rrs this morning by HWB. They also reset the adaptations aswell.

I must admit I haven't noticed any change to be honest, but the previous owner had the filter and fluid dropped around 15k miles ago, so perhaps that's why.

They did say that the oil wasn't that dirty. They also told me that they flush the gearbox prior to adding new oil and add an additive to help with any juddering, not that I had any.

At least I have peace of mind knowing that all the oil has been replaced.
