5L s/c supercharger question.

I’m told that removal and replacement of the supercharger requires some special tools to ensure the belt realigns correctly.
Anyone know if this is correct and what the tool does, and if so where I can get one?

If just changing the belts, no special tools needed, however if refitting the supercharger to the engine there are some special guide pins to align/guide it on. You only need jlr 303-1449-01 however if you have had a new cylinder head or heads fitted you will need to use jlr 303-1449-02. Don't need both sets, original heads -01 new heads -02.

Google jlr 303-1449-01 & jlr 303-1449-02 should come up.

Thanks Col, very useful and more or less what I envisaged.
My Indy who I’ve used for 6+ years says he hasn’t got the special tool to remove the s/charger and can’t get one, but another I ‘ve spoken to described those pins you’ve highlighted so I ‘ve booked in with him to hopefully resolve the problem which appears to be a coolant leak under the supercharger which is stopping getting the air out of the cooling system.
Will hopefully report back when resolved, but will be a while as the new to me Indy is booked up for the next 2 weeks. Crying or Very sad

Hi, your water leak may be the plastic x over pipe (not sure that is the correct name for it), but it passes under the front of the s/c, If you do a search there have been a couple of post about them failing recently due to being plastic on age etc. L/R have modified the replacement pipe into one moulded piece as opposed to two halves bonded together. Just be aware that if that is the issue aftermarket pipes are still two pieces, it's only the genuine L/R pipe that is one piece.

I do have both genuine and pattern one's here somewhere which I can post a picture to show the difference if it's of any use. Fingers crossed it just as simple as a loose hose clip. Top picture genuine L/R one piece, bottom one pattern parts you can just make out they are still two halves bonded together.

Cheers
Col

We've had plenty of chargers on and off without the tools, and never had an issue

It's located on dowels anyway, the pins are only to hold the gaskets in place while you lower the charger Thumbs Up

Though as Col says, the plastic coolant pipes are guilty for failing, and we've also seen a few oil coolers leak as well. They are cheap enough to replace while its all apart anyway Thumbs Up

Many thanks Col & DM, all very useful info.
I’m mystified about what bit of kit my guy says he needs and is £1500 but on back order.
Also annoyed that my coolant problem has only started since he changed the water pump about 400 miles ago and doesn’t want to sort it Big Cry

Do you know if he replaced the o rings on the oil cooler tube?

Problem seems to have started after change of water pump, original? one leaking slightly from the gland. Replacement took some months to get.
Car was in for other work, dynamic pipes and anything else needed doing whilst body off, so w/p changed them.
When collected asked to keep eye on coolant level as Indy thought some air still in system.
I checked before every trip, sometimes putting in 1/2 a litre, sometimes taking out similar amount then noticed small amount of leakage on chassis x member, so back for 48 hrs for a pressure test them checking with an endoscope revealed some coolant under the s/c.
Car ran ok whilst waiting for special s/c removal tool until 1st cold day when realised that heater blowing cold then after about 2 miles went into iimp mode with coolant gauge at max.
Next day at Indy’s request, removed coolant tank cap , let car tick over till up to normal temp on gauge, then suddenly revs increased to about 1100rpm, coolant tank filled up, then there was a noise I can only describe as a ‘crack’ and the coolant disappeared back into the engine.
Eventually with service and mot due, Indy suggested I take car to another Indy who he said had the special tool o remove the s/c. Now booked in with them but they don’t know of any special tool except the pillars/guides.

Yes. Causes a leak from the rear of the pump, under the supercharger

That said, some pumps include them in the box. Worth clarifying Thumbs Up

Yes. Although we always replace the plastic coupling too, as a precaution

They do go brittle over time (same as the upper plastic pipes under the 'charger) and I hate doing the same job twice Laughing

Update—sorry for the delay.
Indie2, after testing the temperature of all the hoses/pipes and finding nothing amiss, drained the coolant and pressure tested the system dry and heard air escaping from the pipe between the top hose and the head.
Turned out to be a damaged O ring( think there are 2) possibly damaged when the water pump was changed, also possibly because it had been run dry the water pump for the supercharger had packed up, probably the ‘crack’ noise I heard.
A couple of months & 2/300 miles on and all seems well.
