tdv8 rr sport zf gearbox

I have the dreaded gearbox issues. I have had the oil changed, properly with a machine. The filter wasn't changed they said i didn't really need to be changed Confused This was changed with DEXTRON 6 is this ok to put in these gearboxes? I have gear ratio faults and clutch solenoid off,seriously messes about. I can drive it as i have got used to it and drive around the faults when it starts working in manual mode the changes are perfect. Sometimes i have to switch off and switch on. I thought about getting a solenoid kit???? or do i just find a second hand box? apparently not the worse job to do??

I can't find any reference to the ZF spec with any Dexron 6 compatible oils...

Did you have the issue before the oil change?

Never understood why people change the oil and not the filter. What’s the use of that? It’s like having a shower then putting all your dirty clothes back on.

The reason they do not change the filter is because the entire thing is of poor design - you have to remove the entire gearbox sump which may require the removal of a cross member and lifting the engine. Why they did not design the sump to allow the filter to be easily changed I do not know - designers should be required to work on items they design.

As a consequence the filter is often overlooked as it is just so hard to change. 07MY RRS TDV6

Transfer case is manufactured by Shell, for JLR Thumbs Up

Genuine transmission oil is ZF

The ZF gearbox is an "off the peg" item essentially. Its installation is down to LR.

However, in something like a gearbox where the servicing might only need to be done once or twice in the vehicle's lifetime, having to mess around a bit isn't that onerous if the compromise makes other aspects of the vehicle better.

It's more important to change the oil and thus the additives in the oil as they are the stuff that makes the gearbox work properly and also limit wear. Limited wear mean less stuff in the filter too. A full flush every 50-70k miles will probably do a lot to keep the gearbox healthy than changing the filter and 40% of the oil as in a "gearbox service".

It's possible to fit a different bottom plate to the gearbox - it has a slightly different internal design. This can be removed without messing around. I had this done on my old TDV8. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

The gearbox has slowly got worse, i bought the Zf long life oil and pan/filter conversion. But i then took it to a local Landrover place to have the oil changed via machine i asked them about the filter they were not convinced it would make a difference.

On the invoice it says 10ltrs of dextron 6 and some additive?

Ive seen somewhere they must have this long life stuff ????

As far as I know:

The oil for a 6 speed is Lifeguard 6 TYK500050

The oil for an 8 Speed is Lifeguard 8 LR023288

Neither of these is DEXRON 6 and I was not aware that it was compatible. Maybe the LR specialist has some evidence to show that it meets the same specification. Paul Redding

Why didn't you ask them to use the oil you'd spent money on?

And Dexron 6 and an additive? I'd be asking them what exactly they've put in your gearbox. I wonder if the additive is just a tube of Dr Tranny.

Sounds like you need to get them to do the job with the correct oil. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
