Help! Body removed to replace exhaust pipe????

2008 Ranger Rover Sport 2.7 TD

I've been noticing a hissing sound in time with engine rpm (getting louder) from left hand side of car, noise coming through the bulk head.

At first we thought it was a leaking boost hose. But on closer inspection it turns out to be the exhaust pipe going from the drivers side bank to the passenger side bank.

My mechanic is not a RR specialist (although extremely competent) thinks it may be body off or gearbox out to replace the pipe.

Any alternatives to this? Preferably cheap ones.... yes I know its a Ranger Rover!!!

Cross over pipe is a body off job. No doubt it can be done in situ, but at what point does labour doing it one way overtake labour doing it the other?

Benefit of body off is that it let's you do a number of jobs easily in one go.. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for your replies.

Fortunately the car is completely covered in snow so I can forget about it for a few days.

It looks to me like a body off job, a local(ish) specialist agreed it could be done via the gearbox but on cars that age suggested there could be an issue with the bolts for that so body off would guarantee less problems.

Realistically coz lockdown I'm going to leave this until better times a) because the garage is miles away and how do I get back? b) I have no money and c) I don't need the car anyway!

Lol.

This sounds like one of those situations where, even though you won't want to, the logic of doing everything else you can do whilst the body is off will pay off in the long run - assuming you plan to keep the car for a while. So it might be worth asking the question on here as to what the forum recommends you get your mechanic to do or at least look at. A 2008 RRS will presumably have done a fair few miles (I have just cracked 100,000), and that will have a bearing on what may be recommended. I know that, sooner or later I will need two new turbos and I'm trying to set aside funds to make sure I only have to have the body off once... Shocked Robin

My SDV6 had the cross over pipe replaced a couple of months ago. Body off but when it was off my indie replaced the fixed brake pipes that run along the chassis. Said it was a quick job with the body off. Now I know the fixed pipes are good for the life of the vehicle - except for accidental damage, of course. Did the ARB bushes too, I think (would need to check the receipt). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
