TDV8 Terminal Battery Drain

Hi there

Looking for some ideas where to start troubleshooting my 09 TDV8. Here are the symptoms;

Car left overnight, came to start and just got the clicking sound, thought the kids had left lights on or something. Though a jump would sort it.

Jump started OK (after sourcing some HD cables). Left idling for 30 min, then went to take it for a spin. Car cut out after 50 yards and failed to start (not enough power to spin starter).

I've had something similar about 3 years ago, it was the alternator, but then it discharged the battery entirely and wouldn't jump start at all. This is slightly different in a couple of ways; i) I can jump start the car ii) The battery still has some charge even after 24 hours.

When jump started, there is no battery warning light, in fact all dash lights are fine. A basic battery/alternator test unit shows the battery and alternator to be OK (when running). It's currently being recovered from Scotland, with the covid situation thats another story!

If anyone has had something similar or suggestions I would greatly appreciate your comments.

How old is the battery??. You say you've done a basic test??,, I'm guessing charging voltage and standing voltage. You should be seeing 14.6V or thereabouts at idle and at rest a fully charged battery would be 12.6V. If you are seeing low 12's at rest I would suspect the battery. Only way to tell is to have a proper test put on it,, it could well be the battery is not holding its full capacity,, I have had this before,, catching me out with the odd flat battery but would run ok once jumped. These cars need a good reliable battery to run properly,, you could try charging it overnight to see if it improves as a quick run round the block will not charge the battery. 2010 RRS, TDV8

The battery was replaced approximately 3 years ago when the alternator failed and cooked it. It's never given me any problems since, always starts without any issues and has not shown any signs of degradation recently. The thing that concerns me is that the car simply cut out after driving only 50 yards following a jump start. I wouldn't expect it to cut out like that once running if it was merely a weak battery. The car is currently being recovered from S/W Scotland to Lancashire. When I get it back I'll connect up to my CTeck charger and give it a refresh cycle then measure the volts like you suggest. Thanks for the advice. Can't help think it's something more terminal and therefore more expensive!

Aye,,give it a decent charge overnight and check your voltages. If you have a 2 piece tailgate the latch on the upper section is renowned for problems,, like letting in water etc whixh is worth looking at for minimal cost. 2010 RRS, TDV8

If the battery is a calcium battery then it will be beyond recovery and the only cure is to buy a new one. After going through 3 batteries in 18 months I’ve binned off the Ca batteries and fitted an AGM.

Check what battery you have (please don’t say it’s another YUASA) and don’t believe the CTEK charger, I had my battery on charge for 3 days with my CTEK with it showing green and monitoring. As soon as pressed the starter button the V dropped and the charger dropped back to 3. It was tricked by a surface charge and just repeated the same cycle over and over again. 2012 5.0 SC AB

If the battery has been changed like for like it'll probably be a lead acid as the original battery would have been wet cell as mine was. I've also been caught out having charged my battery with a ctek but still finding it would go flat if I left the radio or TV on for 5 mins. This problem is down to the battery having a reduced current carrying capacity ( amps),,, this is what you need to start a car, especially something the size of a Rangie. 2010 RRS, TDV8
