Thanks guys , figured it might be normal but as only just started after new compressor was fitted was getting a little concerned that there was a secondary issue, especially as it was loud enough for a colleague to hear in the car park about 30ft away

You didn't need to buy a new compressor - you could have drilled out the sheared exhaust valve and put the new one in.

Garry, sadly as I needed the RRS quickly and the repair kit I got only had the internal spring and rubber bit I was up the proverbial without the necessary paddle

My exhaust valve also snapped off but in doing so the crud that was stopping the valve from closing dislodged so it started working even though the hex head was broken off. I have a new valve and hex housing ready to go if the compressor plays up in the future.

Garry, just to let you know that yes the the exhaust pipe was loose from the compressor, guessing i hand't pushed it fully home, and then knocked it off when fitting the cover.
