France 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey
towing electrics panel is rusty

Hi, I am a new member and I am starting my search in preparation for buying a RRS. With my budget of around 20,000 I am looking at low mileage 2010/11 HSE models. One vehicle at a dealers I am viewing is a 2011 that has 59,000 miles and looks really tidy and clean..(only seen on photos as I live in France but will be buying in the UK). I asked if it had towing electrics and they sent a pic with the bumper panel removed showing the electrics in place. However I can see that there is surface rust on the metal on the bottom part of the metal panel that the electrics are fastened to. It also seems to have some on the top part of the spare wheel cover just below the electrics.

The question is, is this normal on these vehicles with water getting trapped etc or is this a warning sign ?

I would appreciate the views of the members to give some guidance.

Every one i have ever seen has had surface rust around the tow electrics and recovery ring. Seems normal and my 13 plate has done the same.

My brother has a late discovery 4 and that has done exactly the same so i would say its the norm. Luckily the removable panel hides it when fitted. Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

Normal. Some folks remove bumper, de-rust with a phosphate based product, prime then paint with chassis black.
Or do what I did, thin smear of waxoyl applied with a brush without removing bumper. Visitor from fullfatrr.com

I did this, mine was very rusty behind the bumper so removed it, spent 3 hours removing surface rust then treated everything then Hammerite and Waxoyl. That was a year ago shortly after buying the car and it's holding up ok, no signs of rot reappearing at the moment but I'm not expecting a permanent cure. The rust will no doubt come back eventually.

Another area to look at is the fuel tank cradle, also very prone to rot. I treated in a similar manner but there's no way of knowing how much rust is happening on the inside without removing the tank. Just a case of tidying it up and slowing down the inevitable.

Just a thought you could get a 2012 within your budget and you would have the 8 speed and electric tailgate then Smile and maybe a few other bits not on the 2010 and 11s

I would love a 2012 but looking around and pricing things up it would probably have in the region of 90,000 miles minimum on the clock if I'm lucky, Big Cry but will keep looking. Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Yeah this is true most will be higher than the 59k your looking at, i think the lowest 2012 i have seen recently and actually looked at myself was on 72k for 19995 in white. There are others but they are usually in the 80k+.

Still plenty of 2012 upward models with under 50,000 miles available, 62 reg with Approved full warranty, just look on LR Used Cars. See link below, you may have to sort by ascending years, or do a new search.

True, but the cheapest on there is £25,000 which is well beyond my £20,000 budget and that is only an SE compared to HSE that I am after. The cheapest HSE is £28,000. Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Sorry about that, I missed your price range, the second link down is for a HSE Lux at £28000 with 44k+ mileage, which is excellent value when you take in the full 2 year warranty, 2 year MOT cover, Half day off road course and 2 year full roadside and Home assistance etc. I'm sure they would come down £2-£3k on price, much better getting one with full history and the approved package if you can stretch your budget, it is a buyers market at present and once 5 years old they can't offer with the approved package so they are more likely to drop price to move them. John
