United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Alaska White
compressor

just picked up our new to us, 05 RRS. Its got a new compressor on it before we collected it.
Its very noisy in operation and every now and again when we start the engine it rattles like hell for about 30 seconds and then goes quiet, it can come back rattly again and its very intermittent.

But it is noisy during operation all the time.

well, the rattle is coming from the right hand underside of the car, below the passenger door area so i'm presuming its the compressor.

anyone else had any experience with this? its still under warranty (the pump is)

That doesn't right, not at all. Even when mine was leaking it wasn't making much noise. I've rebuilt it myself replacing the piston and guides and it's still very quiet. Think I would be taking it back with concerns if I were you. Easiest way to hear it is open pessenger front door set it in off road height get down near the compressor and then shut the door it will then inflate the suspension to lift the car.

The compressor can be quite loud and will be intermitant as it keeps the air at a preset pressure. It shouldn't sound rattly though.
I would time how long it takes for the compressor to build up pressure, if it's taking anymore than 30/40 seconds then you could have a compressor on the way out or an airleak (requiring the system to be completely repressurised each morning).

If the compressor is failing you will get error messages on the dash warning that the compressor is too hot.

thank you for the input guys,

is there anything else in that rear that could be rattling for 20 odd seconds every so often?

Nope.

It may be that the plastic protective cover has come lose and is rattling.

I would take it back. It may be that the new compressor was mounted incorrectly causing reverberation through the body or indeed it has a fault. D3 TDV6 SE auto 2006

The compressor is fixed to the chassis with three of those dodgy sprung steel 'captive nut' things. They corrode badly and one of them is notoriously hard to get the bolt into.

Most likely when the new compressor was fitted the captive nuts were not replaced with new ones as they should be so one or more of them is broken and/or the fitter was too lazy to bother fiddling around to get the difficult bolt in.

Consequently your compressor may be rattling around when it is running 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I'm going to check all of these things out tomorrow.
Only picked it up yesterday, and I checked the engine oil today and it was 1ltr overfilled.

I've taken that out, very very black it is too. So that's getting changed. 150k on the clock so I'm considering some ATF fluid in with the oil before a change. Do any of you guys do this?

Diesel engine oil usually gets pretty black quickly, especially when you have EGR.

I'd just get under the car and give the compressor a good shake, sounds like a loose mount. MY08 RRS TDV6, Chawton/Black, sunroof, hk, 268k km

Very bad idea to add ATF or any other proprietary 'snake oil additives' to your engine oil. Some of the detergent will remain even after the oil is changed and have a deleterious effect on the lubricating properties of the engine oil. At worst it may dislodge some oil sludge from a place where it is not doing any harm and allow it to move and block an oilway.

Yes - we know many garages routinely stick some rubbish 'oil flush' in your engine at every service. IT IS JUST A SCAM to get another £5 out of you and these garages should be ashamed of themselves.

Just use high quality oil of the correct specification and an original Land Rover filter, (fit it properly with the spigot located in the hole or your engine will have a catastrophic failure).

Change the oil every 6k miles or so. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

It does seam pointless on these cars Rolling Eyes

I cleaned the top of the heads, lifters, oil filter housing, sump and got rid of all the black oil in the engine.

Put fresh in, and it stayed lovely and clean for 2 weeks. That is quite an achievement in itself!

Before 1 month of driving was up, the oil is no longer golden! (more like grey)
and it's a bit noisy when cold now.

My EGR's are blanked for the record.

im trying to get rid if this tick tick tick sound from the engine. (see other post) hence thinking about the flush.
Although i will say i would flush, fill, run for 20 miles or so, then drain and refill with new again.
