And please try it off road, it adds a whole new dimension to wheeled transport - no need to go mud plugging as there is a Green laning Club in Scotland who have the aim of getting Land Rover owners to at least try their car on non damaging, non dirtying (unless you really want to) runs on private tracks throughout Scotland. For 99% of the owners this is their "going to work" car so they cannot let it get damaged. PM Me if you would like more details - I'm near to Stirling. There is a run this weekend at Ardgarten on the west side of Loch Long if you fancy joining in. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Well Guys,

A day from Hell. Collected the RRS last night. Got up early this morning all excited. Gave it a clean and a polish. I always do this straight away as it is a good way to get to know the vehicle. Took it to my local garage that I use for tyres, balancing , wheel alignment etc. Any way got them to check all the wheels. all needed balanced. goto the fourth one, front passenger. turns out the wheel is buckled. What a pain. I think I can get the buckle taken out. Then I ask the guys to stick it up on the ramp so I can give it the once over. I don't think this is right but I could move the propshaft..

Is this right? I can physically move the pro shaft with my hands without any strength at least 6 inches in any direction. WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?

Also spotted a leak coming from the gear box and a ripped cv boot.

Nightmare. It was a private sale. Sent a text to the buy I purchased it from but all I got was " I don't understand how that could have happened".

Any ida guys how much this is all going to cost as funds are now low after buying the Car. I kept a 500 budget for anything I found but was not expecting to end a major prop shaft issue.

Don't panic. Most things on these cars can be fixed.

Which prop shaft is it? Front or rear? Where is the movement you detected? In which direction?

Look on ebay, they are several fronts and rears for sale, fronts £150 ish, rear £250 ish. Only bolt on to transfer box and diff, pretty simple DIY fix.

Its the rear prop shaft.mainly up and down but some movement left to right. I am not much of a mechanic. Would love to be.I take it I would have to hire a ramp to get under the car. My worry is I get it up, take the old one off then get stuck fitting the replacement. Have asked gibbons autos in cumnock to have a look at it and do an overall health check on the var this Thursday. I just do not want to get stuck with a massive bill. I have not used them before so would hate to think they see it as a licence to print money.

Extra inför for you. When I called Gibbons they said it might be a prop shaft bearing but that means they have to replace the whole prop-shaft. Is this correct? Give me a Mac or a pc and I will strip it down and rebuild it or install a computer network from scratch but you could tell me anything about mechanics and I am none the wiser.

Agree with Phil's comments above. Don't panic - all used cars come with some issues and sorting them out helps you to make the car your own and bond with it. Probably it is the rubber supporting the prop centre bearing that has broken down and come adrift it's a common problem and most cost effective fix is to replace the whole propshaft assembly as already suggested. A simple job for a garage to do so not expensive in man hours.

Again an assumption but leaks from the gearbox are often from a sleeve where the electrical connection pass through into the gearbox where the transmission control module resides. Find a transmission specialist who knows all about ZF transmissions and get them to change the sleeve for the newer updated version. Unfortunately to do this they have to remove the transmission sump and partially drain the ATF but in a way this is a good thing as the fluid is probably old anyway. A good specialist will be able to do the job quickly and easily as they do it every day and should be able to supply a generic equivalent Ravenol ATF at a decent price. Don't even think about going to a franchised JLR dealership as they will have your trousers down in a most unpleasant way. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I know it's worrying when you've just spent most of your spare cash on another car, only to find it needs some work. Particularly with something large and seemingly complex like the RRS. However, you are now part of, perhaps, the largest vehicle enthusiast network, so don't do anything in a rush, and throw the rest of your spare (or not so spare) cash at some local backstreet garage.

Firstly, the how does it drive ? When the center bearing goes on the rear prop, you'll generally only notice it at low speed, when accelerating under load, ie up hill. So if it drives OK, there's no immediate panic.
It's also very easy to replace. It costs about £250 - 300. You may not even need a ramp to replace. Try raising the suspension to off road height, and getting underneath. It's amazing how much space there is.

Secondly, either find a Land Rover independent, or better, make contact with Disco_Mikey. He's a mobile mechanic, north of the border, and a Land Rover specialist. Let him have a look.

Lastly, search the forums here, and ask questions. There are plenty of people here only too willing to help you out. With a bit of patience, and the right help, you'll end up with the car you want.

DO NOT put the car into offroad height and get under it without axle stands - it isn't unknown for the air to vent out of the suspension and you would not like 2.7t's to slowly descend onto your skull trapping you under the fully lowered car. Opps, I forgot to mention that Embarassed Embarassed (I'm a bit paranoid about getting under any car, and always use axle stands and jacks as backup, plus spare tyres, in fact they all get in the way sometimes).

Hi Guys,

Put the car into Gibsons Autos in Cumnock. They said its not urgent. below is the results of the health check I asked them to do.

Oh by the way guys some dirty b****** just took a key down.my front passenger door. tried to t cut it out but its to deep. Would you guys have the whole door resprayed?

Some pictures attached.


Rear propshaft centre support bearing isolator perished and split.
Offside rear anti-roll bar droplink play in the ball joint.
Offside front lower ball joint slight play.
Both offside and nearside front lower wishbone rear bushes have play.
The offside front outer CV gaitor is split.
Both rear upper suspension rose joints have play and lateral movement.
The froint brake pads are wearing low and the discs lipped, the disacs have a vibration under braking. Both rear suspension upper arm brake pipes are quite heavily corroded and pitted.
The rear wiper blade is perished.

Have asked twice for costs but no answer as yet. Does anyone have any idea what it would cost to do all this work? Once I get all this done I would like to get some off roading or green laning experience. Anyone got any idea how I do this?

You have ben given some good advice, contact Disco Mikey, you will know the work has been done correctly and that you have not been robbed.
He has VERY good feedback on this forum and the sister Disco 3/4 Forum.

I've waded through most of that list on my own RRS over the last couple of years, (the rear prop is next on my list), it's all stuff to be expected at 100K miles
If you do it all at once, it'll be quite expensive. Start with the worst stuff. Thumbs Up
