5000 miles and it changes like magic

Literally just passed 5000 miles and suddenly the engine is smoother, pulls harder and even sounds different to before.

I noticed this with the same (similar) engine in my last XF, except that took 10,000 miles exactly to do the same thing.

Anyone else noticed a step change in performance/NVH at a similar mileage?

I do wonder if these cars have an ECU setting somewhere to keep the power below "max" for the first X thousand miles, in lieu of running in? Which it certainly did not get, lol. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Well, I listened very carefully again this morning on the commute, and all the effects noted earlier are still there. It even seems to have affected the gearbox - that seems more ready to change down and hold gears for longer. Like being in "sport", or the more subtle gearbox map change you get in "dynamic".

I don't think it is particularly faster, just a smoother, more lively engine and a more enjoyable drive.

I have to admit that I had been concerned originally about the NVH in this car - I never ever felt V6D engine vibrations through the body on my Jags, but this Sport was far rougher. Better now. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Out of curiosity, in the first few thousand miles, was there a slight lag between gear changes, to the point where it made changes a bit jerky?

Thanks

Not really, the 'box has always been a model of smoothness.

But now it seems happier to let the engine pull harder from lower revs. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Just gone through 5000 miles myself. Can't say I notice a difference.

LOL, I had the magic one!

It is still driving better than pre 5000 miles though. And the fuel consumption has changed, too. 1 to 2 MPG better. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.
