Private plates?

Hey all, a few questions for those with private plates or those in the know.
just bought some private number plates one for my dads l322 and one for me (when i get my sport Very Happy )
I have had the V750/1 with his name on his one as the nominee

Questions are:
Can i now apply online to have the reg assigned to the car?
What do i do in regards to tax and MOT?
I have heard in the past you had to send a letter to insurence about 'total loss' you still own the reg, is this still the case?
And for mine do i just keep this V750/1 to retain it till i want to put it onto a car or do i need a retention certificate?

Thankyou all

Hi,

Try following the link below.

https://www.gov.uk/put-registration-number-vehicle

DVLA will transfer the tax and MOT to the new plate but do nothing about the paper copy of the MOT Certificate.

WRT the insurance - you don't "own" the plate , you just have the right to display it. My insurance paperwork had a box to tick for "cherished registration" which means I retain that rIght if they "own" the vehicle after a payout.

WRT retention, the V750 is the same thing as the V778. The V750 is effectively the "initial" version and the V778 is the one you get " between cars" if you move the plate in future, so just hang on to it till you need to assign it- I think you get 10yrs to do it these days.

I had a total loss earlier this year and simply had to put the plate on retention. insurance sent me a letter of no interest which I sent on to Dvla. All this had to be done before I got a cheque. 2015 RRS AB SDV6, Fuji White, Ivory

I've just assigned my private plate today online and it's so much easier than the old system where you had to go to local dvla office and queue and the weeks of waiting too when you sold vehicle while it was cleared

I put it on retention last year online instantly when I sold the RRS and it now last 10 years which is lot better than the previous 12 months

No messing with tax discs either now

Rang Land Rover insurance after I did it to change reg and they hit me with £25 admin fee thanks very much

Check date of expiry on v750 but that should be all you need to keep until your ready Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!
