Hi All, had a strange noise on the RRS the other day after a 40 mile drive, the noise then vanished and all has been fine for a couple of days. Tonight i decided to collect the wife from work and after starting up i realised that the Alternator light was iluminated, i turned off and started up but still there nice and bright with a smell of burning from the front end, i then put my multimeter on the terminals to find the voltage dropping at .1v every second !!!Turned everything off and now have about 4volts left in the battery Is my Alternator Shot ??? 2007, HSE, Cairnes Blue, Factory tints, Love it !!! |

I would say so! Did you disconnect battery? Otherwise battery will be trashed too! Bodsys Brake Bible

With 4V from the battery it's probably already had it. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Thank goodness for my extended Sytner warranty eh (£620,00) p.a, it's recovered and on it's way for a new alternator. Just wondering though is it normal for the alternator to eat and totaley destroy the battery like it has ? 2007, HSE, Cairnes Blue, Factory tints, Love it !!! |

Depending on the failure, yes. If it's the regulator and it overvolts, it will fry it; if it's the diodes, it will short it out, and if it's brushes then it could become knackered through lack of charge if not picked up on. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 Auto HSE Zambezi Silver |
