What replacement tyres?

Hi,

I have 4 x Pirelli Scorpion Zero tyres fitted on my RRS MY 2012. I think that they are the originals as only 26K miles (I bought at 21K). Fronts are down to around 3mm, rears at 5mm. I have a slow puncture in one of the rears.

I'm thinking about replacing all 4 as I'm going have to do the fronts soon and I will have to get the rear repaired (provided this can be done).

Looking for a recommendation for standard size (275/40 ZR20 106Y) tyres. My miles are mainly motorway/town driving and off road is onto the curb!!

Depending on what you go for would recommend going from 40 profile to 45 improves comfort and increased alloy protection with the slightly thicker sidewall fills the wheel arch better as well. Personally running general grabber at2's but you might want something more road bias.. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

just ordered 4x 275/45/20 Michelin sport latitude 3 for 166 a corner on mytyres.... dunno if its mispriced as on blackcircles and all overs they are about 200-214 a corner...get in quick

Depends on whether you ordered "V" or "Y" rated, for some strange reason the "Y" rated tyres are cheaper than the "V" although they are a Higher Speed Rating 186mph for the "Y" as opposed to 149mph for the "V".

good spot..... does anyone know if the composition of the tyre is different? 186mph for the Y, 149 for the V
(not that the tank could/would ever go near those numbers) Had a google but no explanation as to how the tyres differ per rating....what makes one fail at >150?

for any 4x4 why would you pay and extra £40/£50 per corner for a lower speed rating.... the tread/look is the same

The law states you shouldn't put a lower rating than the cars default but that's the only rule I can find....

Could simply be based on the popularity of the particular rated tyre. Rightly or wrongly I simply work on the basis that the higher rating would be the better tyre .

Load rating is more important than speed rating. Speed rating is simply the maximum speed the tyre will handle when running at maximum load. Run it at less than maximum load and it would run to a higher speed. You are required to run the tyre at a suitable pressure for the load applied according to the Highway Code.

For the OP, I would suggest the Pirelli Scorpion Verde all season. 275/45/20 110V XL would be a good all round tyre. Avoids the need for a winter set too, if such a thing worries you. Best to check that your insurer is OK with the slightly deeper sidewall. I doubt they'll be bothered. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

So as I understand, so long as the load is 106 or above its OK?

Speed Symbol "H" For vehicles with a speed capability not exceeding 210 Km/h (130 Mph)
Speed Symbol "V" For vehicles with a speed capability not exceeding 240 Km/h (149 Mph) (e.g. 225/55 R 15 91V)
Speed Symbol "W" For vehicles with a speed capability not exceeding 255 Km/h (160 Mph)
Speed Symbol "Y". For vehicles with a speed capability not exceeding 300 Km/h (186 Mph)

Some tyre people do vary Size/Speed comparisons for some unknown reason, haven't included "Z*" series tyres Very Happy Wink John

Well in the end I decided to get the puncture repaired and stick with what I had for a few months. Whilst they were taking off the rear to fix it the eagle eyed tyre shop owner spotted a bulge in the sidewall on the offside front. It is there but small but definitely needs a new tyre. He wouldn't match Blackcircles price even though he is one of their approved fitters (£20 more per corner). He gave me some BS about how BC waiting times might be days but I knew I could arrange with 2 days.

I have gone with 2 new fronts (Continental Sport Contact 5 SUV) same size as the rear and will be fitted tomorrow by a very local Blackcircles Premier Partner Garage.

Should I get the old rears moved to the front and new tyres on the rear?
