2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
gearbox issues

Need some advice please guys.

I had the cattle grid effect after a double flush at my local iddy on the gearbox and filter change with advanced factors kit problem solved.

15k later its back Big Cry Big Cry

Had a quick chat with inddy and bodsy and hes advised possible torque convertor, or get a mega flush done. Im now thinking mega flush maybe false economy if after the mega flush is happens again.

So now gearbox off time by the looks of things Censored

Can any body recommend a reputable transmission recondition place please or any advise would be greatly appreciated Thumbs Up

One chance at fresh oil and if it comes back it's time for a new TC, IMO. Been through much the same. Thumbs Up

What mileage(s) are we talking? It may be contained to just a TC if you act quickly, but these things can spread to a full box recon if not done in time. Wink Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

About 98k mileage wise mate. Im thinking it will cost at the places ive found so far near me £425 inc for mega flush and £950 plus for tc. Cost me less in labour to take the box off then get a flush Shocked for that reason im thinking get it off and over to a gearbox place to give it a going over.

At 98k, I'd say you have a fair chance of just the TC being required, unless the judder was/is left for a long while (obviously this is subject to no other faults being found etc.). Thumbs Up

£425 is a bit steep for a flush, and the labour to change the TC is significantly more - in fact a power flush only takes an hour or so to complete. About £1-1.5k is right for a new TC in total. For a full box recon (with TC) it'd be more like £2k upwards, dependant on what needs doing. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Ah now that description is different.....

The cattle grid effect is more usually the mechatronic unit in the gearbox £££££
The torque converter issue is usually symptomised (is that a word......? Wink ) by the revs moving up and down by anywhere between 200 and 500rpm Bodsys Brake Bible

Yeah cattle grid at round about 30mph while on a silight incline for the moment exactly how it started last time before i had the fluid change.

The mega flush price is steep but ive rang 3 places and they all seem to be about the same based on ones within localish traveling distance from me that ive found so far Crying or Very sad

Are the cattle grids different up there? Only I thought the normal TC symptoms, and that that I experienced, was just like a cattle grid effect (and rev surging too)? Confused

EDIT: Are you and the OP meaning more that it's brief, like a cattle grid by that? Idea Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Revs during the problem area on the incline seem to be holding as they should guys no change to what it is under normal driving condtions.

Bodsy i assume mechatronic unit is essential a full do over for the gearbox Big Cry

Yes mate only brief in certain condtions so far. Manily on a incline around 30mph with steady low revs it feels like going over a cattle grid and when the road levels out or you apply more speed to the engine it stops the grid effect. Sorry if i was vague in the original post.

That's still sounding just like the normal TC symptoms to me (when I said brief, I was then thinking sub 1 second or something - just an instant blip). It's often referred to as the "cobblestone" or "cattle grid" effect. Will wait for Ian to elaborate. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

It might be worth having a look at the rear prop shaft center bearing, as that can cause vibration under load, ie up hill at lowish speeds.
It's easy to eliminate, before looking at gearbox rebuilds Thumbs Up
