When stacked, the vertical load is from one wheel to the next one below through the MDF. The points of contact are actually the tyres front and back, not the rims. The purpose of the MDF is to stop the rear of one wheel scuffing the front of the one below it while you are stacking/unstacking them.

The wheels are rather vulnerable off the car, the safest place for them is on the car, away from kerb edges, obviously. Mark

Just read David Lillywhite's Octane article where he recounted that the biggest problem with the SVR for filming in Spectre was the reprogramming of the electronics to allow the car to be slid around, rather than the crash damage on the seven vehicles, which gave you the biggest headaches.  

Oh we had more than enough to keep us busy. The biggest headache was timeframe!
