2010 RRS Exhaust Smoke

I am new to the forum.

I have 2010 RRS 3.0 TD V6.

Last Friday night coming home from work I pulled up a set of traffic lights after travelling about 5km from work and lots of blue oily smelling smoke started coming from the exhaust while idling at the lights. I pulled over and shut the engine off figuring a turbo had problems. I started it after a few minutes and the smoke was a lot less so I drove it home (about another ten kms). When I got home there was hardly any smoke. I took it for decent run the next day in traffic and on the freeway and no smoke from the exhaust at all.

There is no drop in power.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Does yours have straight exhaust pipes? If so, sounds like the diesel particle filter was just doing its job. It needs a good run every so often to 'clear its throat'
I would be worried if it was happening all the time

Dave,
Thanks for the reply.
Excuse my lack of knowledge, what do you mean by straight exhaust pipes? The tail pipes or the exhaust pipe coming out of the headers.

Thanks again.

Rob

I didn't think Aussie RRS had the DPF back in 2010 but not sure. 07MY RRS TDV6

Rob,
It's the short pipe coming out of the back box i mean. If it is swept downwards pointing to the road, you don't have a DPF. If it comes straight out it does.
They started appearing in late 2010, so quite possibly Garry is correct.
If you do mainly short journeys they cause more problems than they solve.
I hope it's that rather than anything more serious
Cheers

Gents,

I have had the excessive (blueish) exhaust smoke problem fixed. The fix was a modification which moves the drain from the sump to the block so the drain is above the oil level in the sump. There is an LR technical bulletin for this, number is below.
I am a bit Censored the dealer did not mention it when I spoke with them. How I found out was via a local (Perth Western Australia) independent LR mechanic (Jordan Rover Tech) who were referred to me as being a good LR/RR mechanic, so since my RRS was up for service and needed the suspension compressor upgraded I booked it in. When I asked about the exhaust blueish smoke he said it most likely needs the sump drain pipe kit. It fixed the problem, no more blueish smoke on acceleration.

Hope this helps others with similar problem.

Rob

Thanks for the info.
Having exactly the same issue actually and taking it up with dealer as we speak.

Can i ask if this was fixed under Warranty? As Disco_Mikey said this was not a campaign (recall) and only done on customer request?

Chris,
Unfortunately not under warrently for me. It was around AUD550. The technical note state on the top of the second page Action: Should a customer express this concern, follow the Service Instruction below. So if your vehicle is still under warrenty they should fix it for free.
