pressed air suspension whilst driving - now its playing up?

Nearly home from a 400 mile drive and with 50 miles to go, my son pressed access mode on tdv8
red warning light came up with "air suspension fault and max speed 30"

After a couple of stops on hard shoulder and with me resetting to normal height, it seemed OK.

2 questions:

1) would pressing the access mode whilst driving cause such a problem?
2) Is there some sort of reset that can be carried out manually, to reset things if this needs to be done?

wot no replies? Come on chaps. I'm no expert but pretty sure pressing the button should have no effect at any speed above a crawl. You just get a message on the dash telling you not to be a silly boy as you are going too fast to select access height. Just stopping switching off and restarting resets everything, there's no special procedure. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Hello Paddi,
i was feeling a bit negleted tbh but i held out for a reply and here you are Very Happy

I still have a feeling that my son pushing the access height setting whilst i was flyinh along the M25 may have been part of the original problem but i will never know this.
Strangely enough, since i stopped and restarted the car I had done another hundred miles with no further problems.

that was up until today, when the amber light came up with an image of suspension and it beeped for literally a second and went off again?

Is there an air suspension service that should be carried out on these cars?

No servicing required unless you've had an actual problem with the pump itself. Eg not going up or down. Touching the button at speed should not effect the mechanics of the pump as I believe otherwise land rover would paint it red with a big warning not to press it above 30. try a hard reset if it it keeps playing up.

Hello SCdavies,
I take your point about how it shouldnt affect things by pressing the button when the car is moving but it just seemed too much of a coincidence. Unless it went into access mode by itself and it wasnt my son pressing the button after all, makes me wonder now?

This all happened after 300 miles of continuos driving, so not sure if that would be a contributory factor.

Do the symptoms described point to anything specific, i.e. failed compressor, leaking pipes etc. or am I getting too far ahead of myself?
Is there an idiots guide to hard reset please, I think I will give it a try?

Reset. Remove both battery cables from battery and join them together for a few minutes. This removes any un wanted voltage that could effect some systems. Or pop to a dealer and ask for a reset via your plug in. Drivers side under the steering wheel. In our cars the switch won't operate over 30 to lower or higher excess modes. On the monitor screen go into the 4x4 area and your ll see each corner of the car. Operate the pump switch and you should see each corner ajust. If it's doing what it should I think your pump s fine.

Thats a comprehensive reply SC, i appreciate your interest.

Ive looked at the image on the nav unit and it shows all corners lifting together etc, so I assume no issue with compressor?

another question though, I havent got a constant error message or light on the dash, so will the reset via the battery leads off have any benefit?
will resetting via the battery leads off method, clear the history of an error?

If you have no codes showing then don't worry about a reset. It seems your pump is working fine so I would nt worry about unless any more messages show. But if you get a dealer to plug your car in the fault codes will stay until you get them cleared. I had mine done last and since new the car had 96 stored codes.

I havent any faults showing, it went off after I stopped the car.

My concern about clearing the stored codes were that I will be having the car inspected for the Warranty Direct warranty that I have just taken and Im concerned in case they plug in and find the codes and then elect to exclude these items.

Im not sure what type of inspection they do but if its just a visual and test drive and they dont plug in then I will be Ok.
Perhaps thats me being optimistic though.

You may not have a fault showing on the dash, but a fault can still be stored in the ECU

Get it plugged in and it will probably point you in the direction of what went amiss

just had a call from Mrs Wilpert, the suspension warning light is back on, she is going to the dealers today for a plug in to diagnostics.

Update:

Indie garage plugged in and advised that compressor is faulty and not producing enough pressure to do the job.

Quoted in the region of 800-00 + VAT inc software update.

Is this realistic?
Im doubting my warranty would even consider it as i only just took out the policy.

Im not over keen on spending a grand atm Sad

..sounds expensive. Had mine replaced with software update at my local main dealer about 18 months ago for just over £500 all in... Carl

That sounds like a very good price to me.
I thought the part alone was over 500 quid.
My garage are quoting 150 quid labour plus 650 parts plus diagnostics 50 quid (all inc vat)

Im sure they have a mark up on parts and thats fair enough but i dont want to pay way over the odds.

Would nt pay more than £500 all in. It seems the pump has just got tired. Works ok but just slow. They have an average life of 60,000 miles. You can buy refurb kits for a DIY fix if you have a little mechanic in you.
