Towbar electrics - how much?!

Bought a dirtbike to have a bit of fun on, which led to the purchase of a trailer and a second hand detachable tow bar. I assumed the electrics would be pretty reasonable as I can see looms on ebay for £65. Rang up the local towbar place my dad has used for years and they've quoted £280 including parts and fitting.

Is that normal? From what I can see its 'plug and play' rather than having to splice into existing wiring etc. Anyone done it themselves?

From memory Ripon Landrover charged me 100-150 pounds supplied and fitted.
Is there a software update required to let the rear parking sensors know when they electrics are active ie when a bike rack or trailer is attached? 2015 Golf R DSG
Gone 2013 Mercedes C220 CDi AMG Sport Plus

I've done mine . it takes a couple of hours and I'm no amateur mechanic in fact the opposite Laughing

You can find instructions on topix so you can see the steps. I think I paid £120 ish for the wiring kit.

It does require bumper off which though daunting is actually fairly easy. A search on here will find a YouTube link.

On both my RRS I didn't bother with the software update, though someone like Bodsy can do this. You just press the parking sensor off button.

I might see how much as it seems more annoying on MY11 than my MY06.

Good luck with it

The "software" mod does a lot more than parking sensors. Turns off rear fog light when towing, uses a different map on the gearbox and turns off rear parking sensors on earlier cars. Having suffered the results of a botched install from dealer on my first V6, it is advisable to get the function switched on in canbus to avoid gearbox going into freefall. Those who have got away with it are lucky rather than wise. Bow down 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HST Java Black

I just bought these (£109). Fitted in about 2 hours (half in the dark with a torch). Wasn't the easiest thing to feed the wiring down behind the bumper of the HST, but alas, finally all went home and works a treat.

I already had a small loom that connected to the green plug behind the boot trim which I suspect cancels the PDC sensors.. but my light board has a foglight and this works when turned on.

Cheers..

Ian

I was told that it is necessary to remove the bumper but from the referenced "how to" it seems that it might not be necessary. Could you please confirm this?

Some of the newer models require the bumper to be removed to fit

I didn't for this installation. Bumper is very easy to remove but there was no need.
