Alloy wheel corrosion

Hi, I have a 2013 RRS, old style. When cleaning my car this wknd it was like a surface rust had appeared on the wheels. Wonder wheels would not remove this. It took a brilo pad and a lot of elbow grease to remove.
Is this the start of corrosion on the wheels? I have never had to scrub alloys to clean them like that before, it's like a protection coat is missing? Anyone any ideas? Back to the dealer?

They are standard 20" wheels, came with the car, not diamond turned.

My advice on the first instance is ditch the wonder wheels and the Brillo pad, way to harsh for the wheels and I wouldn't tell the dealer that's what been used either Wink

From what you're saying, it doesn't sound right. Are they silver painted or diamond cut? If the latter, it could be that they have become corroded.

Pay the dealer a visit and see what they have to say. You're well within the guarantee, so hopefully you'll get it sorted. Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Yeah did think the brilo was harsh, only thing that would remove the surface rust. It's all off now so will just have to wait and see if it comes back... I have a feeling it will, they are not diamond cut.

Its my guess what you could see was very hard baked on brake pad debris. The RRS brakes have to work hard and even after the shortest trips you'll find brake debris on the wheels - was it a long time since you last cleaned them? Have they ever been sealed with a hard wax?

The Brillo pad catastrophic mistake will have severely scored the lacquer on the surface. You should have used Iron X which magically dissolves brake debris in a few minutes. The only way to save your wheels now would probably be to use Iron X then polish up the scratched lacquered surface with something like G3 and apply a hard wax or sealer. If you leave them as they are the brake debris will stick to them even harder. If you don't have the inclination to do it yourself take it to a good detailer. They can work wonders. brilo pads should be kept in the kitchen sink not in the car cleaning cupboard Shocked

Wonder wheels, used occasionally is ok IMO, but iron X or Wolfs Deironiser is the way i go when doing a deep clean, in between I use Wolf Chemicals Clean and Seal, cleans then break dust off and leaves little nano sealers behind when you rinse it off

Can you post a pic to show the corrosion? MY2007 RRS TDV8 Black - tinted glass - side steps- stormer grille - 20" diamond cut alloys - alpaca leather - TV/DVD pack - some blingy chrome bits & bob's

I used this a lot, but have recently changed to Bilt Hamber Korrosol as it works out slightly cheaper and is marginally better IMHO. Smile ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i
