Buckled 20" WHEELS

Newbie question

I have ’59 TDV8 HSE, had it 6 months and been trying to fix the steering vibration. Put it to the LR in Aberdeen (surprised by their good level of cust service) for the steering wheel Tech Bulletin. Turns out I have 4 buckled 20” wheels & 4 warped disc’s (probably from the wheel vibration during braking).

Found a thread about “Soft Wheels” and it being talked about before. Are the 20” 275/40 wheels prone to buckling, i.e. pot holes etc.

Needless to say at 36k they wont replace the wheels under warranty but will do the disc’s (I need to pay for the pads), seems that the mileage precludes their replacement. Quoted £2,600 for new one’s.

Anyone heard of or seen this before? Is it just their size that makes them prone to buckle?

Re the cost of new wheels, maybe talk to Duckworths, they have some fantastic deals on alloys they post up.
Example here Thumbs Up

Edit: Sorry meant to say, can't add anything about the wheels being soft of the cause of the damge, just trying to save you a few £'s as the dealer is charging you a lot for new wheels Smile ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Yes genuine wheels, but 3 had been kerbed, not deeply (well not enough to think it bent the wheel) just surface scratches. LR Aberdeen say 3 badly buckled 1 not so badly buckled. I didn’t get it from an LR dealer and they paid for the wheels to be refurbed as i pointed it out at purchase. Needless to say mileage and refurb = not covered under warranty. After a bit of persuasion the agreed to do the disc's.

Annoyingly neither the refurb (The Wheel Specialist) nor the twice balance since noticed buckled wheels. I'm taking it back to the supplying garage for us to see how buckled they are.

Just surprised that all 4 would/should be bent but I guess a decent pothole would oblige with a 40 profile?

Town and country are a great dealership , regards the wheels as suggested have a look at duckworths for sale thread, get yourself a pretty much new set of 20's for a little over a grand and chase the dealer for a few quid compensation.

The wheels don't really need to soft for them to buckle. Any alloy will buckle if the right force is applied, unfortunately it's one of the problems due to the state of today's roads, a 2.5 tonne car travelling at speed hitting a pot hole could cause a lot of bother.

I recently had my wheels refurbished and was told that two of them were buckled.. Had been badly kerbed by the previous owner. Any decent wheel refurb place will sort out the buckling with the application of heat and pressure. Not had any problems since.

So I took it to the supplying dealer last Friday (not an LR dealer) so he could look at the wheels. I asked to see them on the balancer (for my own sanity) and I have 3 straight wheels and 1 slightly misshapen and was told they had balanced worse. When they checked all 4 were out of balance between 40 & 60 grams.

They put the bent one on the back and re-balanced all 4, did 450+ miles over the weekend and not so much as a flutter from the steering wheel.

Censored astounding!

Been balanced by 4 different folk, the wheel refurbishing co, twice by a renown tyre fitting co and once by LR dealership. Now I understand why none of them said any were bent. Shocked

I’ve asked LR why they wanted me to buy 4 new wheels at £2,600.00 when all they needed was balancing properly, let you know if I get an answer.

Pusser - I know its a while ago now but did you get a response from LR? I'm having the same problem at the moment. Bought the car from an independent dealer and reported the vehicle 'shudder' from 60mph upwards. He then said it was anti roll bar bushes and replaced them. The problem remained so I dropped it into a local LR dealer to diagnose. They've now reported all 4 wheels are buckled despite wanting to charge me an arm an a leg for trying to balance them!
