What Diesel?

Hi all,

New bloke here

I have a very simple and silly question. Mr. Green

TDV6, do I just use non supermarket ordinary diesel?

I fill up with Tesco finest diesel, purely down to convenience. A bit lumpy on very cold starts, but otherwise runs fine, and still returns 30+ mpg on a run Thumbs Up

2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

Shell V power for me,a bit more expensive but I get 5mpg more with it ,the car runs better.Pays for itself and some Thumbs Up

Shell Nitro+ for my motor, Ive been putting it in from new, and Ive never put anything else in. Not sure if i get anymore mpg, but i don't really care. Currently getting 27 mpg on a 18 mile daily round trip, all B roads.

Generally use supermarket fuel but every so often (5 or 6 fills) I give it a treat of the BP or Shell expensive stuff!

MPG......not a lot, but I like the car Thumbs Up In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

I used to use normal Esso diesel but for the last 12 months or so I've been using either Esso Supreme or BP Ultimate (I think those are the names). I doubt it gives any more performance really but I hope that the better cleaning additives will be better for the engine... Thumbs Up

Every now and then I give it a shot of Millers too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

If you google about cheap supermarket fuel you will find quite a lot about the lack of lubricants in cheaper fuel.

The advice is that every 4-5 tanks you should use a good quality fuel to ensure the fuel pump remains well lubricated.

Although it was some time ago I ran a diesel on cheap supermarket fuel for 15,000 miles and the fuel pump casing failed completely...it appeared via researching 'honest john' in the Daily Telegraph that it was very likely due to cheap non lubricant fuel.

The post about using a decent fuel every 5-6 tanks is probably right in my view.. 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE in Artic Frost. 20" 2010 HST Alloys, sidesteps, Hawke tips, plus minor bits and bobs along with a remap. Four spike spiders ready for the Alps again now tucked up in their garage boxes...

doing main in town driving using Tesco diesel i used to get 290 miles per tanks, when Shell opened a branch i swapped to using their Fuel Save Diesel and the occasional once or twice a month tank of Nitro + I now get 350 miles per tank and the engine doesn't rattle as much

If your car is fitted with a DPF it is not a god idea, in fact its a pretty bad idea, to add 2 Stroke.

^^^^ True its a subject around which there are a load of opinions.

My arguments are, even at high levels of dilution, ...
1. 2T oil is mainly designed for use in air cooled engines which run at higher surface temperatures than liquid cooled diesels so there will be increased residue on the relatively cool valves , pistons, and piston rings etc.

2. The 2T oil will not be fully burnt off - put your finger in the tail pipe of a 2T lawn mower or motorcycle (not while its running) and see the sticky sooty goo! This will be caught by your DPF and may not be burnt off by the regeneration cycle which is frequent of the Sport being scheduled about every other tank full in normal use.

3. Any fuel pumps, pipework or engine component failure etc. that you may want a contribution from LR / warranty policy will, if tested, reveal the 2T and so the 'contribution' will evaporate.

4. A turbo charger repair is likely to be £3k plus and the 2T is likely to be evident !!

Thanks for posting that link Paddi, there is some really interesting arguments put forward by the German chap there. I have a couple of gallons of two stroke oil in the garage sitting about as it happens......

I am also a supermarket fuel user. It never seemed to do our Sprinter vans any harm, but then again nor did the myriad of other substances we used to put in them masquerading as fuel back when times were hard.

I've used Shell V power nitro since ive had the car.

Again not sure if it gives any extra mpg but hopefully it looks after the engine better.

But I'm definitely not getting drawn into the 2so debate as there are more than enough posts on numerous websites if anyone wants to read up on the subject. The case for using premium fuels though is proven IMHO so would definitely support it. My TDV8 certainly likes Shell V power nitro stuff and runs more quietly. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
