To 'Grass' or not to 'Grass' that is teh question.

Here's the thing....

Thought we'd have some fun so bought a TDV8 from a franchised stealer sevral months ago. It had more than a few expensive problems (largely because the 'pre-sales' check etc weren't done properly.

So we rejected it; Dealer says OK we'll find you a replacement in a week or so.

3 months later I spotted a potential Sport advertised by the same dealer with 'Full Service' history. We agreed a price and collection date etc subject to seeing and confirming the Service Records which they did not have to hand. After a week the service book turns up but the car hadn't been serviced for over 20 months since new and then it was serviced again inside a few months. Since this broke Land Rover's "every 12 months" rule and voided the warranty I walked away from the deal as it looked to me as though it may have been doctored.

I saw another possible car advertised by teh same dealer as "1 owner and Full Service" again we agreed a 'deal' and collection date; also subject to checking the records. You'll have guessed - when the Sevice book turned up this car, although over two years old it had had only one service at 14,000 odd miles, its speedo was showing 17,500 but the advert had said 15,000 a week earlier( 2,500 miles in a week!0. The driver seat squab was knackered and it had a set of new wheels wearing cheap Chinese rubber. In my opinion it looked as if this car had also had a 'haircut' but I can't prove it of course so I walked away from this deal as well!!

The dealer now says I'm too fussy and wants to refund me my cash so we make a "clean break" -i.e. they don't want to sell me a car "... in case you find something wrong with it..." !!!.

A few weeks on and I've now seen the second car back on the dealership's website advertised as 'Full Service' which unless a few services have been found and entered in the 'book', it ain't.

So the moral maze is whether to 'grass' on them to JLR and/or the OFT?

Doesn't answer your question but, I seriously believe there ARE some dodgy LR dealers out there, I've seen it myself, and thought Censored this, I'm out o' here Shocked ....I think, just get your full refund and walk away, avoid this dealer at all costs.Whether you want to grass them up afterwards ? well that is up to you. I know I'd be thinking it was a lucky escape........phew!Wink RRS TDV8 Buck Blue (no, not now in my dreams). ..........D3 TDclankety clankV6 ............BMW 318i

Might be worth giving us the heads up so we can avoid the dealer, what does the name rhyme with ?

Having previously worked in the workshop, in a franchised LR dealer in the past, I could tell you some horror stories about "FSH" cars etc.

Personally, I would be trying to find a forum member selling up. You can have a look through their previous posts, and find out what, if any issues it has had. And on the whole, they tend to be a trustworthy bunch of people, unlike a few dealer I have bought cars from Thumbs Up

See if a friend can buy the car, well double check and if the service book is fabricated and inform JLR, but it maybe brushed under the carpet anyway as JLR won't want their image tarnished

I pretty much agree with all that's been said and not sure I have the time to put into 'grassing' the dealer.

The situation we all face is that, apparently, JLR does not have a database which is updated when a car dealer services a car.

Unlike BMW etc where the 'key' is a log read by the Service Dept when you take the car in. I know it means that cars serviced by independent repairers can drop off the system but at least prospective buyers would have some chance of checking what had happened in the 3 years before it started getting MoT records of mileage.

It is a big, murky hole when you start getting into naming and shaming. There was a whole thread on D3, about a dealer who charged a lot of money to replace some very expensive items, supposed to be under warranty, but then charged the customer, as the warranty would not pay out.

The forum was threatened with legal action, as was the customer, unless the posts were removed...

Not as simple as you think Thumbs Up

It was factual. Everything was true, and factual, with documentation to back it all up, and yet legal action was still threatened...

Not going to get into the 'naming and shaming' to avoid any blow-back on the Forum.

I shall give their MD a chance to respond.

Range 17 - I bought my RRS through them last March, and have to say that I received both fantastic customer service and the best deal offered by any of the other LR dealers in the surrounding area.

My car is due for its first service in March 2013, so I'll let you know how it goes.
