gearbox oil change

Hi all

Going to change gearbox oil on my 2006 2.7 sport @ the weekend.
need to know if Dexron 3 (auto 15 ) or fully synthetic 75/90 GL5 WOULD BE OK
I am a plant mechanic so have oil in stock .
have been advised by oil supplier that dexron 3 is ok but not sure.
any help would be welcome.

thanks Question

There is a load of information on this subject over on the D3 site. Supposedly sealed for life, but lots of reports of gearbox shudder under load. I assume the same box is fitted to the RRS 2.7, but I'm a new RRS owner.

The Shell spec oil is seriously expensive and only available in 1 litre bottles. I went with Millermatic ATF DM for my D3 and it cured the shudder after a double flush. Plenty of people have used alternative oils with no problems.

gearbox oil change

hi I changed mine myself

you must use the specifide oil otherwise you can get a oil curdle and thats bad news

not the easiest of jobs 7 ltres LR say but when I done mine only got 4.5 back in which I was told from LR was good as alot of oil stays in transfer box

shudder cured on mine

Thumbs Up

Gearbox oil is recommended at 150k/10 years, but well worthwhile replacing at 75k. Also consider erplacing the sump/filter assy at the same time.

Your local Britpart dealer can supply you with a gearbox service kit, which includes the sump/filter and ZF Lifegaurd 6 oil

Alternatively, the only oil we have found which appears to meet LR's own spec is made by Ravenol, and is slightly cheaper: http://ravenol-shop.co.uk/shop/category_72...=cid%3D%26

We have never used it ourselves in the workshop though, so cannot comment on how well it works Thumbs Up

LR are always a good source of duff information " .....I was told from LR was good as a lot of oil stays in transfer box ". Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Well it would wouldn't it since the transfer box is a separate unit with its own oil of a different specification?
I think LR will find it is the torque converter that retains half the oil.
Great advice from Disco Mikey Bow down Bow down - thanks I'm planning to do exactly what you suggest. As I understand it the old plastic sump with integral filter has to be pulled off which involves breaking a plastic pipe and then replaced with the new after market sump which is metal and has a replaceable filter? Any tips on exactly how to go about this job would be much appreciated. I'm hoping changing the oil might fix the odd problem my car has with the very occasional (once on a 50 mile trip) hard shift. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

The old sump does not need to be broken to be removed. The transfer box needs raised, and the O/S engine mount needs unbolted and the engine raised up, but it does come out

The aftermarket steel sump does come with a seperate filter, and is much easier to fit. No idea on price though

The Britpart kit uses a Genuine LR sump pan, and ZF Lifeguard 6 fluid.

The 1 and only time I would recommend Britpart Laughing

Never done a TDV8 yet.

Have done a few TDV6, and petrol V8's. Can only imagine the TDV8 would be the same as the petrol V8, as the downpipes take a pretty similar route Thumbs Up
