Brake Pedal making a Knocking noise on the Gear Stick.

You will be a good one if you can help me with this one......

This Evening I have noticed that as soon I turn my Key in the Ignition so either all the dash lights come on OR I actually turn the engine on, if I tap my foot on the Brake Pedal in either P (Park) or N (Natural) a knocking noise appears from the Gear stick Area and if I have my Hand on the Gear Stick I can Actually Feel it. If I have the Car in D (Drive) or R (Reverse) or have the Key out the Ignition altogether then it doesn't make the knocking Noise.

Anyone know what this is? And does it do it on Your RRS? Also it wouldn't have anything to do with My Low Battery Power would it? (Posted in a Different Thread)

Please Help as its Very Worrying

dont worry.

it's the blockage pin solenoid that inhibits the gear stick movement from P or N if the brake pedal is not pressed.

a security feature.

so Is it normal then as I have only just noticed that it does this? It does sound quite loud and you really can feel it on the gear stick. Also as I have said in D Drive or R Reverse it doesn't make a noise at all its just N Netural and R Reverse. Also coz it is placed in Park when you stop the next time to put your key in the ignition until the dash lights appear you can hear the click.

100% OK

P is a "TOTAL STOP" position
N is a "TEMP STOP" position

all the others "RUN" position and because of this, they must not be blocked so no need to lock them

imagine that a child moves the stick out of the P or N, from the rear seat when you are out of the car Arrow movement and Arrow ...accident or damage for sure...

with the brake pedal press needed, this fact is so less easy to happen.

i feel the "clack" every time i press the brake pedal but...maybe i'm so mechanical or acustical sensitive...

if you hear and feel a very loud "knock" as is the stick is soo heavily hammered them something is not good there...but hear and feel a slight "clack" every time you have the brake pedal pressed AND the stick is in P or N is 100% OK

Yeah I feel a slight knock under the Gear stick each and every time I tap the brake pedal in N and P and I can hear the knock noise from the gear area, just a bit worried as I hadn't noticed It before.

if you want to see what is the noise generator "thing", is the shift lock solenoid in this document.

we have the lock in P and N.

Ok cheers, just sounds bad though as it clicks when you push the brake pedal in and then clicks again when you release the pedal !!!!

The noise/feel is caused by the Shift Interlock Solenoid.

The shift interlock solenoid is located on the side of the selector lever assembly. The solenoid operates two locking levers which engage in the lower lever and lock it in the Park (P) and Neutral (N) positions.

When the ignition is on or the engine is running, the solenoid is de-energised and prevents the lever from moving. When energised, by the depression of the footbrake, the solenoid is energised and the selector lever may be moved from the P position.

If the selector lever is left in the N position for more than 800m/s the solenoid will be energised and the selector lever will become locked in the N position. To move the selector lever from the N position in this condition the footbrake must be applied. This prevents the selector lever from being moved to the 'D' or 'R' position unintentionally and the application of the brakes also prevents the vehicle 'creeping' when the gear is engaged.

So, what you're hearing/feeling is the locking levers engaging/disengaging!

To Bobby's write up, I would add that if stopped in N on a slight incline holding the brake pedal the solenoid will be energized.
As you remove the foot the solenoid will become de-energized but as the car start to move few feet the solenoid will be energized again al the lever will move freely(do not know if based on speed, distance or time) '08 RRS TDV8
I converted my diesel RRS to run on an environmentally friendly mixture of caribou fat and baby seals oil

Yep, I kind of like it....press the brake and bingo a click in the gearstick. Sometimes I just sit there and do it a dozen times....because I can! RRS TDV6 Bluetooth, VR, Roof
