Surely it shouldn't be this bad!!!

Bought some blanking plates for the egr valves recently on my 55 2.7 tdv6. When I removed the bolts I was amazed to see how corroded they were, at least the three that I could remove!! They had almost rotted through in places and I was very lucky to get them out without snapping. The last bolt rounded off so I need to tackle that one again. Does anyone know why they'd be so badly corroded, and anyone got any advice as to what to replace them with, I used some random bolts I had in my toolbox as a temp measure but not sure if I need to replace with landrover ones, though judging by the state of what I removed maybe best not to! On a positive note although I only managed to blank off one valve this has massively improved responsiveness and my mpg has improved by about 2 mpg.

Tony, it's fairly normal for these to corrode, I bought a few of them, and replaced them when I changed an EGR valve a few weeks back, I put some copperslip on the new ones, in case I ever have to remove them again,(fairly likely Whistle ). Pt no for these bolts is RYG500220 for a 55 plate (same as mine). Thumbs Up RRS TDV8 Buck Blue (no, not now in my dreams). ..........D3 TDclankety clankV6 ............BMW 318i

Thanks for that, just picked some up from my local friendly Stratstone in Cardiff, took 3 calls and 25 mins on hold to establish if they had some and then charged 4 x the price that they were available online for (same manufacturer), cheers Landrover Laughing Still trying to get one of the rusted rounded bolts out, made a right mess of it, anyone used any of the 'Grip Sockets' for rounded bolts before??

Thanks for the advice but space is a bit tight and I have neither the knowledge or equipment for welding Embarassed I ordered a set of Irwin grip sockets and that worked a treat! Only problem was it took the head clean off the bolt, but I could then get to and remove it. Both sides now blanked and what a difference Thumbs Up Definately something to look into if you have a pre-2007 Rrs.

Mpg gone from 26 to 28 for a mixture of urban and motorway/a roads. Definately increase in responsiveness, used to get intermittent flat spots when pulling off, much better now

I read another thread about 2 different methods one being blanking and the other being removal and blanking.

I thought you had to remove the EGR regardless?? 2009 3.6 TDV8 HST

I'm no expert but from what I can gather you have 2 options, blanking which just involves removing 4 bolts, then inserting a blanking plate and replacing bolts or full removal which completely removes valves and pipe work. It's my understanding that the end result is identical but the blanking method is cheaper and easier....just be prepared for rusty bolts!!! Full instructions for both methods are available online

Thanks Tony, Might just be me being fussy but I think I would want them out completely.

Do you need tha same kits for both options then? Dont suppose you have a link for those instructions do you?

Thumbs Up 2009 3.6 TDV8 HST

Check out bell auto services for the full removal kit, seems popular with people on this forum. A bit more kit than just a pair of blanking plates but it depends on which option you want. Full fitting instructions on BAS website. If you just want blanking plates search for 2.7tdv6 blanking on e-bay. Thumbs Up
