Pardon my ignorance on the terminology but there is a drum thing behind the wheels (poss end of axle) that is a silvery colour.

Mine are very rusty. Quite a few rrs I see are like this if you look through the gaps in the alloys.

What can be done about this? Can they be repainted? Is so what paint from where?

Yes, can be sorted, you just need to repaint the offending area, the 'hub' I think.

You'll need:
Wire brush
Brake cleaner/strong degreaser
Hammerite spray paint in your choice of colour - silver?
Masking tape
Patience

Does it go silver once you have driven in a while? Then rusty once its been standing a while. If it does don't paint it it could be your brake disc. Maybe pic of rusty area.

Hubs on mine went rusty after around 3 months - one of the niggles I have. Wouldn't expect it on £20K spend never mind the RRS

Would I have to take tyre off?

Yes, you will need to take the tyres off......and the wheels too

If you prep it properly and paint it well, it should last a good 18 months at least, so it not like it'll be back next month.  ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i
