Brake Pads

Just put the car in for a service at 4.5 year 20,000 mile and had the call to say front pads are 80% worn. I have chosen to wait until the sensor advises I need to change them as the 20% remaining could last me almost a year based on history.

Have I done the right thing?

If your not a putting the miles on then i think its ok to do so, i suppose 20% left is still enough to brake adequately as the sensor would come on if it wasn't

I would also not get the dealer to do the breaks, my dealer just quoted £160+ off the top of his head to do the rear breaks on my FL2, i bought OEM pads and my mate fitted them for a Chinese takeaway Smile (and took 30mins max)

I was quoted £275 for the front only.
20,000 doesn't sound enough to need pads. I know its a lot lighter car but my 5 series has done 35,000 and still no pads.

I just replaced my pads and discs at 31 000 miles on a D3 so 20 000 miles seems really low. 2011 MY- RRS HSE - Zermatt -Ebony-Piano .... its a monochrome world

i suppose it depends, lots of short in town trips means your on the brakes more, were as motorway drivers will not be on the brakes as much

On line next day parts £45 a pair, thats £230 to fit whilst being serviced by an independant dealer. Last time I had it serviced they said it needed new tyres as the edges were worn. I managed to get two years more out of the same tyres and it passed two MOT's I worry about anyone with a spanner!

Ignore the dealer, Imagine my horror during the last 12 months on my foray into Jag ownership, it had 4 new tyres at 14k and new brakes all round at 16k.........and £11k in depreciation just to rub salt in the festering wound

When I had a MB E320 thay quoted me for repacing the pads and when I went to pick it up they had added someting like £30 labour for taking the wheels off Big Cry MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

France 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

I know it's an old tread but after weired sound on rear left yesterday evening, I call LR Assist as I though a rock has stuck itself between the break pads and the disk due to some marks on that disk...

It actually turns out that the rear left pads are totally worn out and that the rear right is about too (but not enought for the sensor to start)... And the front are pretty well used as well...


Car will be 2y old in a few weeks and has 19,500 miles.... Seems a little low for the pads to be gone, no??? Range Rover Vogue ‘17 TDV6

Unfortunately a lot of dealers now are using an upsell bonus scheme.
Mate has worked as a mechanic at a Toyota dealership for 19 years, providing quite a good service . But now thinking of leaving due to upsell pressure, recommending parts that don't need replacing . He is an excellent Toyota mechanic but incompetent trainees are performing better due to happily advising work that is not required.

I done my own, front roughly around 25k and rear at around 30k ish, - bear in mind i drive like a Censored

driving around for around 3-4 weeks with the sensor on, brought all Genuine LR Pads for around £75 from LR and done it myself, took 10 minutes replacing the sensor took more like 30 was a right Censored to get to.

Also the pads had stupid amounts left on them after 3 weeks of the sensor coming on!

PM me if you need any help replacing them yourself.


p.s does anyone know roughly what milage you should do the discs?
