Quick Tyre Question....

Morning all,

Finally decided to get rid of the 22"s and putting the S/C 20"s back on. New boots for a fresh start......Has anyone used 275 / 45 / 20 tyres??

Any info appreciated. Everybody is clinging on to their sanity….Some just hide it better than others….

Why did you put back the 20"? Is it because of ride quailty? Is there much different? I have 22"and too are thinking putting back on 20". What tyre did you have on your 22"?

Thanks Alex. Just heard differing views on 40 & 45 profiles.

Never been overly happy with the ride & cornering with the 22's, then there is the constant suspension faults - may not be linked but all too coincidental if you ask me. The rubber was 285/35/22. Everybody is clinging on to their sanity….Some just hide it better than others….

No problem, Just depends on what you want the tyre for.... Just road use or a bit of play as well...

On the rear of my 8 series I started with 275 45 17, then I tried 285 30 19. Bad mistake but I settled for 285 35 18.

IMHO. Running 35 or less (rubber bands) on a 3 ton car will kill your bushes over and over again (unless you uprate them....)

Pootling around The Big Smoke at <30 mph wont do much harm but on normal use highway, well you can see where I'm coming from.....

If I lived in the town then 22" all day long. Crying or Very sad

I have 22"and my tyres are 285/35/22 does that mean is no good to the bushes? I don't take it off road just town use.

It is a veritable can of worms, this one....

So many factors as to whether your bushes are going to be all right or not...

The bushes themselves. Tyre pressures, Road surface. Driving Style. etc etc.....

So I would be happy with your car enjoy the look and replace when you have to....


Years ago people used to say to me. You can't put that wheel on your car...... The bearings will go under the strain... But guess what, they didn't.

If you like what you see and she drives good, don't panic. Just enjoy it....

If you are inside of warranty stay away from the 22s; I hear LR is getting picky about issues that could be possibly related (blamed on) to low profiles, even down to the make of tyre on a 20inch rim.

If its outside of a warranty (including a 3rd party non-LR insurance) you can do what you like of course but be ready with some cash for bushes and track rod ball ends etc.

From a purely engineering perspective unless you fit wheels with the corrrect offset the steering self-centre action and tyre foot-print centre will be miss-aligned causing all the dynamic forces to be above the designer's intentions; in the short-term you may get away with it or not, in the long run the 'chickens will come home to roost'!

If rrs bushes can't handle the 35 profile of 22" wheels then it just goes to show how bad the range rover sport is built and if thats the case then its not fit for purpose, its a bloody 4x4 for heavens sake, designed to off road. Mr. Green

had a set of 275/45R20 Yokohama Advan SQ7 on my RRStdv8. This is the same tyre as used on cayenne and Q7 and was chosen for the stiffer sidewalls and slightly higher profile to cope with ocassional transgressions onto gravel roads and road shoulders, as well as our substandard road conditions in Aus.

I found the steering response and ride quality to be excellent and much better than the Conti 40 profile tyres they replaced....as well as adding some confidence when road conditions deteriorated. You can weigh up the warranty issues if any.
