service prior to purchase

I just bought a '56 plate TDV6 from a Main Stealer and (PROBABLY FOOLISHLY!) had assumed it'd be all serviced upto date.....

It seems it not, and after just 2 weeks of ownership and 500 miles, i'm now looking at needing a £450 service in about 1000 miles ! - can this be true - can a main dealer sell a car that need a full service in 1500 miles time?? - does this fall within Landrover used car sales protocol!? suppose I could ask the supplying dealer, but i'm a bit embarrassed to be honest as I drove a hard deal and don't want to give them the satisfaction of knowing they've got one on me !

unfortunately I'd say you should have asked before buying Confused sorry

It would have been nice and friendly for the dealer to have mentioned this before hand, however clearly its not in their interest to offer this info. Out of principle I'd go elsewhere for the service

I see your point, and I'm sure I should have haggled-it-in on the deal, but when they say they have to replace 4 tyres 'cos "Landrover say they can't sell a car with tyres of 3mm or less tread left" I thought they'd apply similar standards to the service.....its just gonna be inconvenient trailing 40 miles back to them for a service so soon !

I would suggest that it is somewhat sharp practise, however did you not buy using the Approved Used system if it was through a main dealer.................... it should have had a full service as part of the approved used scheme before even going on the forecourt. I think you should go into the dealership and have a few stern words with the Sales manager or even the dealer principal and tell them that that isn't the sort of practice that you expect from a Land Rover dealer selling an top spec car.
The cars do have a service indicator, but a dealer should be able to hook it up to the testbook system and find out when the next service is due.
If you cannot get satisfaction then as Kaine says I would find another dealer and never cross the threshold of the selling dealer again. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I'd like to check just what the "approved" status gives regarding service, but don't know where to look... the LR website is a bit vague on the subject ! - anyone know where to get a precise description?

One way to find out is to visit another dealership and ask what Approved Used covers and ask for some literature
Here is what the LR website states

I would consider that the "Comprehensive multi-point inspection - A rigorous inspection by specialist technicians and all rectification work completed." would include doing a service... otherwise how can they see what condition the oil and filters is in?

Certainly don't want to return the car !! - we're only talking about a service after all!! and it took me bloody ages to find the right car!

I did drive a very hard bargain, and maybe this is the cost to me of doing so !? - although the website says the cars will be checked, it doesn't seem to say they will be serviced!

I'll e-mail landrover head office tomorrow and ask them what the position is....

As you've only owned your car for 2 weeks go back and insist on a free service or you will exchange it for another vehicle as is your right under the 30-day/1,000 Mile (whichever is sooner) Exchange Policy - they will lose more in doing this than giving you a free service. Drive a hard bargain even if you don't intend to follow through with your threat, what have you got to lose? 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Dont quote me on any of this but I had discussions recently (November) with a salesman out of a Stratstone dealership and he explained that as part of the "approved used scheme"... if the RRS requires an imminent service they do it prior to handing you the keys. A free service is performed should the RRS require one within a certain milage having been sold. Which i think is if it falls in the next say 5K.

That was my interpretation of his pitch...clever distraction and mumbling of certain words such as "possibly and we might do" may have confused me some what though. Rolling Eyes

Im in total agreement with VA you dont have a thing to lose by playing a bit of hardball, but a free service to be gained...good luck Thumbs Up

Approved Used does include what is effectively a PDI, but I don't believe this includes a service by default. However, it would be surprising to learn that if a used car goes into stock with a service due in such a short amount of time, they wouldn't do it.

Unfortunately, I have to agree that really you should have asked this before purchase and that may affect how you can broker getting it done after taking delivery. No harm in asking though but not sure how hard you can play it without them (quite reasonably imho) playing the "told you so" card.
