This little piece is in one of the shipping trade e-zines that I receive from my company

The 100 millionth box at all ocean container terminals in China this year was handled at the end of November in Tianjin. The abacus estimates to have to count some 117 million TEU by the last day of 2007.

A TEU is a standard 20ft container. Now to put this into perspective all the ports in Europe only handled 40 million TEUs among them.............................. OK so the figure also includes empty units being returned for refilling but 117,000,000 is a hell of an impressive number of containers to handle. 2007 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Rimini Red

I don't have any figures, but I won't be surprised if it's the same volume for imports. It seems China is like a black hole, sucking-in resources, especially commodities. That's why everything is getting expensive in the last few years. Oh, and let's not forget India too.
