Hm.. love these questions.

RS4 Avant might suit you down to the ground.. how important is economy for you? The Rs4's residuals have calmed a lot now, they are out of production lot of car for the dough at £40k. Not the most economical of cars, specially on the motorway, think mine used to average around 12 mpg in town, and around 17 tops on the motorway..

The M5, yeah like ST said, test drive it, see if you can get along with the gearbox, is a large car inside, but people have moaned about the speed the V10 downs the tank also but apparently nothing feels quicker past 100 then these V10's in full attack mode.. again good value at £40k ish, and they are definitely in the price range now where people are picking them up, so residuals seem relatively strong with the cream wacked off the top.

Others to consider? M6? cheap for the car you get, at £50k, room is an issue in the back though, how old are your kids? if their feet come off the end of the seat, then this probably isn't an option.

RS5 is a couple of years away.. me and Kaine have orders down.. Gecko did too, but he's had to pull out, due to having a third kid recently. (no good with 2 fixed seats in the back..).

Loads of options out there for you, CLS 55/63 AMG? E63/C63 amgs'... i test drove an E63 amg recently, and even though it made my M3 seem like a limp hairdryer, it just all seemed toooo much for the real world.. good to have a hoon about in every now and then, but every day?

How bout a new shape S8? load of car for the money, not that common, and arguably not that much in demand for thieves (don't know what it is as much as an M'er..). 5.2 V10 and you can get them with B&O soundsystem and porcelain brakes, and they drop 20k in their first year, so plenty of well priced cars out there within group, and they are eager to sell them, full time auto, room for the kids, not as common as an M5, and loads of boot space and has more toys then your sport... but again.. economy? do you own shares in Bp?

RRS TDV8 may be the way forward.

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

Of course you could up the anti and have a chipped TDv8, although personnally I find the standard tune perfectly acceptable there are a few of them out there now and folks seem to be very pleased with them and there is room for the kids and decent boot space. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 SE Arctic Frost

TDV8 gets my vote too.

But then again . . . a nice little Jaguar XKR-S Convertible would definately make a nice alternative. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

Yes i did, my FIL had it for ....2 weeks and then gave it back (lost 8K on it), its not worth the hassle, just take it of your list, that gearbox is SH8T

He now drives a 535D and is very happy

Have you turned into Clarkson, Super? Laughing

Don't forget SMG is a bit of ageing technology now and there are better gearboxes today, but it does what it says on the tin as long as you're used to it. The replacement DCT box is meant to be much smoother as it's dual-clutched, the same as Audi/VWs DSG boxes. If you want completely auto then you have to go with AMG, I suppose...

You know one thing that would be quicker? The solicitors letter for more maintenance would beat me home in a straight drag race!
