I've been using an Ionic Systems filter cartridge @£45 each for about two years now. Really pleased with the results. Had to change to the 100% filter when I changed to a dark car as the 80% didn't remove enough hardness to prevent spotting.

I wonder if buying de-ionised water to rinse the car would have same effect? It would certainly lighten the wallet to buy 20ltres per car wash! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
