Why are the dealers quoting £300 for a satnav upgrade? Most folks here who have had it done appear to have been charged around £100, basically the labour charge (what labour is involved in downloading a file to an ECU?) for the job, so how do the service agents arrive at £300.

Not even that. Just get a newer disc and stick it in the DVD player. Screen goes white for a while. Then the firmware gets updated (you see the progress on the screen), and then starts working again.....

You can even put your old NAV disc in. It still works. I checked that out for Jayman.

Now, I am assuming that as the newer disc upgrades the firmware, that also enables Nav on the move. I think that is a fair assumption.

Clearly we are assuming that I have a DVD player...where is the SatNav data kept if not? I have a 6CD changer in the centre console...where should the DVD slot be? 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 FSI Grey/Black Int.

The DVD drive is under the passenger seat, but is a bit fiddly to get the disc in and out....

Ok thanks for the info...by the way...its function is purely for the SatNav or is it able to play DVDs as well?

By the way can the stereo play MP3? And more importantly can the DVD play MP3? 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 FSI Grey/Black Int.

I asked the same question when I picked up the car and he showed me the DVD player......and the answer is NO Big Cry , it will not play DVDs, stupid really! To access the DVD player you move the passenger seat all the way forward and get at it from the back.

NickM,

Early vehicles will not allow you to enter destinations unless stationary, whereas the later ones will!

Nick, it's the ability to enter new routes/postcodes etc whilst the car is moving. On pre-07 models, you weren't allowed to do it by default but there was a special key combination (1791) that allowed you to do it for the duration of the car being "on". From the factory, 07 and later models were enabled, but you can enable a newer car by inserting an 07+ Satnav DVD in the drive to upgrade it.

AJSG, no DVD output from the Satnav drive, but the head unit (CD player) DOES play MP3 CDs.

Thank you for that information.

If I can really simply upgrade the firmware by inserting this DVD I am going to go ballistic on the dealer...this is really too dishonest for words...in fact if they don't call me back soon I'm going to pick up the car before closing time. 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 FSI Grey/Black Int.

Well, they'd be charging you a) for the new DVD and b) if a dealer's going to rip you off they would charge you a minimum hours labour, which I think is £120 for most London area dealers. Even so, the quote you were given is way overboard. Anyone would think they didn't want you as a customer Rolling Eyes

Hmm, not sure... I know BMW changed from CD to DVD in 2003, because that affected my M3.
