Just had my e-bay identity 'compromised' and have had to have all the security stuff re-set.
Has anyone else had any problem like this lately?

Not personally, but I believe it's a reasonably common occurrence (at least in terms of the amount of eBay users that exist).... what happened?

ivery - normally this happens due to you clicking on a dodgy 'ebay' email etc - do you remember doing this at all?

No I do not click on unknown emails and in addition I am 'flaggged" before any of my id's or passwords are sent anywhere and this did not happen..
This came about after I lodged a "BUY" request for an item that was not listed for sale.
The first I knew about it was a flood of e-bay messages about items and questions of which I had no knowledge.
This was followed by advice from ebay that my password and secret question had been "reset" as they had found out that they had been 'compromised' . I confirmed that this advice was genuine. I am now locked out of my account because only they know what the id's are..
Trying to follow their advice on how to re establish the account has met with consistent failure.
After the 5th or 6th email to them I pointed out that an extensive analysis of my systems revealed that the problem was theirs and that this exercise was taking up too much of my time.
They now refuse to answer my emails.
In addition I am now receiving dire warnings about trading e-bay items off their system.
I have never done so and have no knowledge of the vendors or items mentioned.
In particular they refuse to answer whether my paypal account has been compromised.
The whole process from my point of view has e-bay acting in an arrogant and insulting manner.
This is just a time wasting joke but I'm not laughing anymore.

I don't doubt for a minute you've tried, but have you attempted to speak to someone from eBay as opposed to email? Likewise with Paypal? Doesn't sound to me like they're taking it very seriously

Ivery, I've been victim of credit card and bank account identify theft twice and it's not pleasant. Lot's of work, worry and incovenience, so I empathise with you and your predicament. As stated before I put out a 'Buy' request on ebay.
I received a reply to my own (non ebay) email address and as it looked identical in all respects to a genuine ebay email I clicked on it's reply link..........BIG MISTAKE as this was not a genuine email from ebay
It was a data miner. As far as we can work out it was limited to ebay information. I have since change all my passwords and where possible my log on details for anything sensitive
LESSON.
If you get what looks like an ebay email on any non ebay mail account DO NOT OPEN IT .
IF you accidentally open it DO NOT click on any links it contains. In addition just opening it may have started a keystroke logger so my advice is to re run your anti virus and change your passwords when all appears to be clear. Do not change your passwords whilst the keylogger may be active.
If it is a genuine ebay message it will also appear in your 'my ebay' messages. If (after logging on to ebay through their main address........in Australia ebay.com.au) the same message appears then you can deal with it from there as it is probably genuine.
If it doesn't appear in your message box on ebay.........go back to the headers in your personal email account and forward the suspect message (without opening it) to the ebay "security' centre. In Australia this is "spoof@ebay.com.au"
Ebay will acknowledge and reply to this email only in your "my ebay " messages area.....
You may continue to receive 'spoof ' emails to your personal account for as long as the idiot wants......they are trying to get you to click on the link so that they can get your new log on information....forward them all to ebay security as above. !
The primary flaw here is that my identity and private email details were "leaked"
I hope this may save someone from going through the time wasting rubbish that I've just been subject to.

Thanks for the advice ivery. The key point that you quite rightly made is to only open and reply to "ebay" emails using the "My Messages" section within your official "My Ebay", and not from within your personal email inbox. If they're genuine, that's where they'll ALWAYS be found, and, if they're not there, they're obviously fraudulent or "spoofs."

I've had similar expriences and received "ebay emails" in my personal email inbox that dont appear in ebay itself. I just forwarded it on to spoof@ebay.co.uk or spoof@ebay.com and then deleted it. Clearly they were not genuine and I had no further problems. The critical issues to remember are never click on any of the links contained within the "spoof" email and never divulge your personal or security details.

I have an email in my personal emails from what i thought was ebay telling me that my credit card on my paypal account had expired and it also listed the last four digits on my credit card that had expired, i dont have the same message in "my ebay"

after what ivery has said i think i best report it to ebay, or could it be genuine given that it has some of my correct card details
