re qns regarding gas remaining - the system is one similar to BMW and you will get a different reading depending upon;

ambient temperature
temperature of gas and gas tank
historic fuel usage (last few kms etc)

ie point is that when the temp changes from shut down to start up you will be given different values based upon the above and other parameters (as parameters change - eg fuel density and therefore volume changes to give a different reading)

that said - to avoid expensive mistakes, find a garage in good time (not at zero km) - or do you want to be towed home for losing a game of chicken (even if clarkson thinks it is cool) and be the recipient of a massive bill into the bargain

it wont do it any harm to "run it out". It will never run out, there is always 10 litres of fuel in there to keep the system wet, ECU goes into "run out of fuel strategy" which means it will turn off injectors to give a surge and a missfire then stop, you will then need to put in at least 10 litres to get it running again.

So what you're saying is that if the system detects less than 10 litres of fuel, then it shuts itself down - the end result being that the car stops itself from running dry? Confused

Yes, if the high pressure pump runs dry, it will kill it as the diesel is a lubricant, this system prevents that, so basically, there is always 10 litres of unusable fuel in the tank to keep the system wet even if the gauge is on its lowest point and the range says 0 miles.
