Auto-Express this week have published an item about the fastest roads in the UK and the A74(M) between the M6 and M74 tops out with a highest average speed over the survey period of 72.2mph, 2nd is the M6 Toll (71. which is a bit odd as it is also monitored by average speed cameras along it's length so one wonders how many folks have been sent FPN's for speeding on it!
From my own experience the A74M is also one of the safest roads in the UK with a very low accident record.
The data was collected from TrafficMaster beacons and cameras and by monitoring drivers using their Smartnav system (so who isn't spying on drivers then?)

And the slowest motorway in the country is the A601(M) spur in Lancashire which hits the bottom at 35.5mph!
Autoexpress claim that the A74M is used mainly as a business route and has generally light use............. what they don't mention is that it also has conventional junctions (ie not angled to the main road they are at right angles!) and can be used by tractors and low powered vehicles, you are also likely to meet buses stopped on the section they monitored so was it really a motorway? So where does that put the advocates of killing speed and putting loads of speed cameras up? There are actually hardly any fixed cameras on the A74M, but there are regular mobile units and unmarked policed cars, also mobile vans park on the few bridges over the road. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

seen a few comments about the average speed cameras on the M6 Toll - have driven it many many times - always crusised through at 80-90mph and never had a ticket - I know there was talk of cameras before it opened, however I'm not so sure they are in place
