TDV8 or V8 petrol LPG?

Hello,

I am planning to buy a RRS at the end of the year at the latest.
Can anyone help me with my choice between a TDV8 or a V8 petrol?

Environment is important issue to me so a V8 on LPG is probably the best choice.
But has anyone experience with a RR Sport on LPG? (size of tank, position of the tank, reliability?)

Thank you,

Dino

Hi and welcome - go for the TDV8 - seems the obvious choice from what you have said

THX,

I always wanted to go for the TDV8 but recently I started to have my doubts.

With the rising fuel prices a version on LPG can be financially interested!

dont have any figures to back this up, however I would guess the TDV8 would be faster in real terms than the Petrol V8 aswel (not talking SC here of course)

Also after conversion the V8 petrol would have a lot less bootspace............................ because the 2 conversions I have seen that is where the tank has been put. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Not sure about where you are but I bet when more people switch to LPG the tax on that fuel will increase! 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Another point is that the 4.4V8 is now being phased out - residuals on an LPG V8 will not be a patch on a TDv8 a few years down the line 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

You could always go for a 'mixed' LPG/Diesel system which will release around 5-10% more power but increases fuel economy by around 15-20%.

PM me if you require details Smile

There is an LPG conversion that uses the spare wheel area thus not impeding the boot. JE Engineering can also reduce the petrol tank volume to make space there.

http://www.jeengineering.co.uk/lpg_con.htm

SC v TDv8 debate rages on.

A second hand SC (which is fully loaded) can now be had for less than £38,000. A new or second hand TDv8 is more than £50,000. The SC will continue to fall for sure, as will the TDv8 at a lower rate. The 4.4 will probably fall fastest as there is no real point in the engine (thus it's discontinuation) given the performance of the TDv8 so there should be some bargains out there. I reckon that if you stick LPG in either an SC or a 4.4, the value is going to tumble some more anyway (it shouldn't, cheaper to run, more environmentally friendly than diesel (which is dirtier than petrol)). If you are going to keep her until she's worth £20,000 (probably in 3 or 4 years time), I shouldn't think it will matter which you will buy. The slow diesels will probably be worth 25% more. The tDv8 will probably be worth £30,000 (but cost £10-12,000 more to buy into in the 1st place).

So, the 4.4 or the SC. You'll get a 4.4 for less than £35000 (probably cheaper - there is a LPG RRS 4.4 taxi in Aberdeen (boot mounted tank covered in a carpet box etc so looks OEM) - can't have spent mega money on it). I might use the saving over the SC to pay for the lpg.

LPG really could be the answer to clean, cheap (both in terms of the fuel and the buy in costs as Petrol SUV values plummet), performance SUV motoring. So ask yourself, can you live without a spare wheel or reduced boot space or reduced petrol capacity? Then ask yourself, do you need the best performance (and pay £5k more) for the SC or more budget minded for the 4.4.

Let us know how you get on. 2022 P440e AB

Paulo typical tight Aberdonians - an LPG RRS and it's a Taxi! Could you try to get a photo for the "Spotted" section please? I've seena D3 taxi in Glasgow and also a pic of an RRS Commercial but an RRS Taxi would be quite a thing! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
