I added to a thread this week regarding a starting issue. I would press the brake pedal, which has rock solid and press start only to hear a click. This would normally happen a couple of times and on the third attempt it would start.

Reading on the ffrr forum, someone who had this issue, found that the starter relay had pitted. Once replaced, he didn't experience the issue. I have changed my starter relay today and it seems to start everytime, for now.

Before changing the relay this morning I thought I'd check the battery voltage, its not been used for a couple of days and that was a 150 mile journey. The GAP tool showed the battery at 12.2v whilst I was sitting in the rrs with the door closed and ignition off. When turning on the ignition, without starting, the voltage dropped to 11.3v. Once the engine started, after a minute or two, the voltage was at 14.6v, then after that was at 14.9v.

I know the previous owner had a battery and alternator replacement done in May 2020. The vehicle has covered another 27,000 miles since then.

Would the voltages I've seen be normal or do you think the battery maybe on its way out ?

I had a Jag that had the pitted contacts on the starter relay. So I would suspect that was your issue.

I was going to measure the battery with my multimeter this morning but, typically, the battery needs replacing. So, I'm waiting for the missus to bring one back with her later.

Right, multimeter sorted.

I'm getting 12.4v on the terminals directly after unlocking and opening the bonnet without the engine running.

Battery needs charging with a decent smart charger. Although I reckon it's looking a bit tired. A drop from 12.2V (not great) to 11.3V (rubbish) suggests either it needs a decent smart charge or it's .

Charge it and see what happens.

Edit: I see stuff changed. Typical. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for your reply RRSTDV8, yes, both the battery and alternator were replaced with LR genuine items just over 4 years ago/27000 miles ago.

I don't use my rrs all the time, I mainly use through the winter months. Otherwise I try to run it one week every month.

Perhaps the battery is on its way out ?

Well, just popped out in the rrs, pressed start and then 'click', the second press it started fine.

The battery voltage prior to starting was 12.7v, which seems to be fine.

I've read that a few people on here have changed starter motors due to this issue but some have replaced them a few times as the new ones don't seem to last long.

I think I'm going to clean the earth points behind the front splash shields and go from there.

It's a weird one.
